The story
La Vecchia Signora occupies one of the more characterful addresses in Copenhagen's historic centre — a half-timbered building from 1753 on Grønnegade. The restaurant is run by Achille and Olimpia, a couple whose Sardinian roots shape everything from the warmth of the welcome to the depth of the wine list. Their family-led approach has earned the restaurant recognition from Gambero Rosso, the prestigious Italian food and wine guide, which has named La Vecchia Signora among the best pizzerias in Copenhagen multiple times across 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2023, and 2024 — a consistency that speaks for itself. The restaurant also holds the Italian Chamber of Commerce "Q" quality certification for Italian hospitality worldwide.
In winter, a large fireplace warms the intimate dining room. Come summer, the courtyard opens for candlelit dinners under the night sky. The service, led by Olimpia and her family, is described as authentic, friendly, and attentive — the kind that makes guests feel at home rather than processed. It is an atmosphere built on genuine hospitality, not theatre.
The kitchen moves across the full range of Italian trattoria cooking. Handmade pasta is a clear priority — ricotta-filled ravioli with butter and sage, pappardelle with meat and vegetable ragù, tagliatelle in gorgonzola sauce, and spaghetti alle vongole with cherry tomatoes all feature. Starters follow the Italian canon: carpaccio of raw marinated beef tenderloin with parmesan and rocket, vitello tonnato, mussels in white wine with parsley and garlic, and a classic caprese.
The pizza section is extensive and carefully composed. From a simple Marinara (tomato, garlic, oregano, no mozzarella) to the Siciliana loaded with aubergine, capers, olives, tuna and anchovies, and the Fantasia del Pizzaiolo — the pizzaiolo's own creative interpretation on any given day — the range rewards both the traditionalist and the curious. It is this pizza programme, rooted in Neapolitan tradition, that has drawn repeated attention from Gambero Rosso's inspectors.
Meat dishes include rosemary-grilled lamb cutlets, veal fillet in truffle sauce, and beef tenderloin with green pepper sauce. The wine list leans heavily on Sardinian producers — Cannonau, Vermentino, and Carignano from estates including Cantina Su'entu and Cantina Santadi — alongside a well-chosen selection from Veneto, Tuscany, and Piedmont.
Desserts are made in-house: tiramisù, pannacotta, and a lemon sorbet with Limoncello round off the meal in proper Italian fashion.
