The story
At the corner of Møntergade and Gammel Mønt, in the heart of old Copenhagen, two historic buildings form the stage for one of the city's most celebrated dining experiences. Restaurant Møntergade is a place where classical craftsmanship and modern gastronomy meet — a philosophy that has earned it a coveted Masters level recognition from White Guide 2025, in a guide that celebrates the great smørrebrød renaissance sweeping Denmark.
Since 2020, restaurateurs Simon Juhl Olesen, Rasmus Amdi Larsen, and Karina Pedersen have steered Møntergade with deep respect for history and a sharp eye for renewal. Behind each service stands an experienced, tightly knit team: Betina Simonsen Madsen leads the lunch kitchen, Jacob Hundsdal commands the evening kitchen, and Janni Horst Hansen ensures every guest feels genuinely welcomed. Together, they share a love for classic Danish gastronomy, respect for craft, and a desire to create memorable moments — whether over a weekday lunch or a long Friday evening.
At lunch, Møntergade pays homage to the iconic Danish open-faced sandwich with smørrebrød prepared with care and precision. The menu spans herring and fish to meat and warm dishes, complemented by daily specials from the chalkboard. Everything can be combined at the guest's own pace, rounded off with cheese or something sweet. The monthly rotating lunch menu always keeps the classic favourites — and for those who can't stay, smørrebrød is also available as take away.
As the afternoon fades, the kitchen shifts into a Danish-French brasserie, drawing on the finest seasonal produce from both Denmark and France. Classic traditions are reinterpreted with a modern touch, and guests compose their own dinner — whether at a table or perched at the dining bar. The cheese trolley and desserts are not to be missed.
Møntergade is equally celebrated for its extraordinary wine programme: over 1,500 wines spanning 65 pages, from Grand Cru Bourgogne to small, passionate producers. The list has been a finalist in multiple categories at Star Wine List of the Year Denmark, including the prestigious "Best Long List" distinction.
The Møntergade universe has expanded well beyond the restaurant itself. Today it encompasses the wine bar Apéro, Bar Sportif, Møntergade Wine, and Møntergade Banquet — all gathered side by side in the historic heart of Copenhagen, united by the same warmth and dedication to quality.
