The story
Tucked into the old red timbered house where Møntergade meets Gammel Mønt, Apéro is one of Copenhagen's most characterful spots for wine and food lovers. The premise is refreshingly simple: drop by for a glass of something good, a bite from the kitchen, and good company — whether that's at noon or late in the evening.
The White Guide has recognised Apéro at a "very fine level," singling it out as the place to go for excellent tapas-style plates, an outstanding selection of wines by the glass, and cocktails that span both the classics and newer variations. That recognition holds up the moment you look at what's actually on offer.
The wine-by-the-glass list is genuinely serious. On any given day it runs from a Müller-Ruprecht Riesling Trocken from the Pfalz and a Domaine Kreydenweiss Pinot Blanc from Alsace through to a Sylvain Pataille Marsannay Pinot Noir and a Marco Ferrari Valtellina Inferno Nebbiolo — all available by the bottle too. Orange wines, Provençal rosé, and grower Champagne from the Aube round things out. The range is wide enough to be interesting, curated enough to feel considered.
The cocktail list covers both territory with equal confidence. Signature drinks include the Tropic Chartreuse Slush (gin, Chartreuse Vert, pineapple and lime) and the Calvatini, built on a six-year Adrien Camut calvados with white vermouth and lemon. Alongside these sit the full canon of classics — Negroni, Sazerac, Last Word, Old Fashioned — executed without shortcuts.
The small plates are the kind of thing you keep ordering without quite meaning to. Croquettes filled with ibérico ham and aioli, oysters with hot sauce, a bikini toast layered with comté, mozzarella, prosciutto toscano and caviar, a beef tartare dressed à la Bloody Mary. For something more substantial, the kitchen turns out ravioli with rabbit, marjoram and ramson jus, and a cod dish finished with Noilly Prat sauce. A three-course lunch and a six-course menu are both available throughout the day.
Dessert leans into the same playful precision: vanilla ice cream with olive oil and caviar, ricotta ice cream with rhubarb and strawberry.
Apéro describes itself as intimate, and the setting earns that word — a historic building in the heart of the old city, with outdoor seating when the Copenhagen weather allows. It works equally well as a long lunch, an early-evening aperitivo, or a proper night out. The bar and the kitchen are in conversation with each other here, which is exactly what a place called Apéro should be.
