Celebrated table

Teatro

Since 1993, Teatro has brought Italian-rooted contemporary cuisine to Calgary's downtown, with a 15,000-bottle cellar and a custom Tuscan grill from Florence.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

Serving Calgary Since 1993

For over three decades, Teatro Ristorante has held a singular place on Calgary's dining scene. Housed at 200 – 8th Avenue SE, the restaurant has spent more than 32 years refining a style it calls Contemporary Mediterranean Cuisine — grounded in Italian tradition, shaped by seasonal ingredients, and anchored by one of the most serious wine cellars in the country. That consistency earned Teatro recognition from Gambero Rosso, Italy's foremost food and wine authority, a distinction that speaks to the kitchen's genuine Italian sensibility rather than mere inspiration.

The Room, the Cellar, the Grill

Part of the restaurant's character comes from its physical bones. The wine cellar occupies the original vaults of the Dominion Bank, built in 1911, and holds up to 15,000 bottles across more than 1,400 labels — with a deliberate focus on Bordeaux and Italian reds chosen to match the menu's depth. At the heart of the kitchen stands a custom Tuscan grill sourced directly from Florence, finished in Ferrari red and fired with birch, fruit woods, and charcoal. It is the kind of detail that signals intent.

Ingredients and Ownership

Owner Dario Berloni brings a personal thread of Italian provenance to the table: extra virgin olive oil from his family's olive groves in Italy's Marche region arrives alongside finishing salts from Italy and Brittany, and fine imported cheeses from across Europe. Where local and organic producers can supply what's needed, Teatro sources from them. The bread served at every table is baked fresh daily at Alforno Bakery & Café, a sister property within the Teatro Group.

What's on the Plate

The contemporary cuisine spans lunch, dinner, weekend brunch, and a five-course Chef's Tasting Menu at $135 per person. Handmade pastas — Bucatini Carbonara with guanciale and pecorino, Agnolotti filled with braised beef short rib, Linguine Vongole — sit alongside grill-driven secondi like a 25 oz AAA Ribeye, Lamb Loin with king oyster mushroom and gnocchi, and a whole Branzino with salsa verde and buttered fingerling potatoes. The Tiramisù, made from the Berloni family recipe, closes the meal with the same sense of lineage that runs through the rest of the menu.

The cocktail list draws on Alberta's landscape for its names and ingredients — Saskatoon berry, hay-infused gin, beef-fat-washed rye — while keeping one foot firmly in old-world Italian tradition with Grappa and Italian Vermouth. Spirit-free options are given equal care.

Teatro also hosts private events for two to two hundred guests, making it one of downtown Calgary's most complete fine dining addresses.
