The story
Blue Bovine Steak & Sushi House occupies a striking space inside Toronto's Union Station, one of the city's most significant heritage buildings. Designer Nadia Di Donato has layered warm colours and luxurious leathers against the architectural bones of a historic rail station, producing a room that is at once grand and genuinely comfortable. The address on Front Street West puts it at the heart of downtown, easy to reach for a weekday lunch or a proper evening out.
The restaurant is a Liberty Entertainment Group project — the Toronto hospitality company led by Nick Di Donato that has spent over three decades building landmark venues across the city. At Blue Bovine, two distinct kitchens work in concert. Chef Sean Blomeley oversees the beef program, and the credentials are serious: Blue Bovine is one of only three Toronto restaurants certified as a Kobe beef purveyor, sourcing directly from Kobe, Japan, and finishing cuts in an in-house dry-aging room. The à la carte menu ranges from Canadian Prime and AAA steaks aged 28 days to Australian Wagyu at MB9+ and Kobe filet, striploin, and rib eye sold by the ounce. A Wagyu Filet Tasting — Mishima Reserve American, Japanese Kobe, and Australian MB9+ side by side — gives the table a rare opportunity to compare three benchmarks at once.
On the Japanese side, chef Yi Joo Na works with fish flown in daily from Japan, offering an à la carte sushi selection that runs from O-toro and Hokkaido uni to an A5 Wagyu maki finished with Miyazaki beef and soy glaze. For guests who want to put themselves entirely in the kitchen's hands, an exclusive Omakase experience is available.
Wine Spectator awarded Blue Bovine its Best of Award of Excellence in 2024 — recognition that reflects the depth and curation of a list built to stand alongside both premium steakhouse cuts and the more delicate flavours of Japanese cuisine. The bar program extends to house cocktails, martinis, and a sommelier wine selection, all available at half price during the weekday lounge happy hour from 3 to 6 pm.
Lunch runs Monday to Friday from 11 am, with a separate menu of lighter plates — miso marinated black cod, a spicy sashimi salad, Wagyu ciabatta — alongside the full à la carte. Private dining and catering are available for events. Partners include investor Kevin O'Leary and Toronto Maple Leafs player Mitch Marner, adding a certain local character to what is, at its core, a restaurant defined by sourcing discipline and technical range.
