The story
Ennui serves modern Australian cuisine inside the restored sandstone walls of the former Pitt Street Presbyterian Manse. Construction began in 1840, and the building housed priests, iron forgers, bee keepers, and locksmiths before its latest incarnation opened in 2024. The kitchen balances French classics with Australian favourites, drawing on the site's layered past. Visitors can join the dining room for dinner every evening starting at 5pm, or attend for lunch on weekends.
The kitchen secured a score of thirteen in the 2026 Australian Good Food Guide, a rating driven by the eponymous Duck Ennui. This preparation combines bone sauce with roasted beets and a cherry component. The dish anchors the menu. Reservations are recommended to secure a spot, although walk-ins are accepted when the room permits.
The drink list stems from the founders' extensive backgrounds in wine service. Ennui curates a selection that bridges traditional regions with emerging producers, offering both old and new flavours. This approach supports the French influences present in the food while providing variety across the board. A private room is available for parties looking to host functions or enjoy a quieter meal away from the main floor.
