The story
Ristorante Quadri occupies one of the most storied addresses in all of Italy — the upper floor of a palazzo directly on Piazza San Marco in Venice. It is part of the Alajmo group, a family-run restaurant empire that spans Padua, Venice, Paris, and Marrakech, and whose flagship Le Calandre in Sarmeola di Rubano holds three Michelin stars. Gambero Rosso has recognised Ristorante Quadri with 2 Forks, a mark of distinction that reflects the seriousness of what the Alajmo family has brought to this exceptional setting.
The restaurant carries the DNA of two brothers who have shaped contemporary Italian fine dining. Massimiliano Alajmo — known as Max — is the chef at the heart of the group. Born in 1974, he trained under Marc Veyrat and Michel Guérard before returning to Italy, where he became, at 28, the youngest chef ever to receive three Michelin stars. His guiding philosophy is precise and uncompromising: "Cuisine must strip itself of what's useless to rediscover the innocence of a child."
Alongside him, Raffaele Alajmo — Raf — serves as CEO and maître des lieux of the entire group. Born in Padua in 1968, he began as a sommelier before taking over management of Le Calandre with Max in 1994. His own maxim is equally telling: "Attention to detail makes all the difference." Together, the two brothers oversee more than 14 restaurants, and it is their shared sensibility — rigour in the kitchen, warmth in the dining room — that defines the experience at Quadri.
Ristorante Quadri sits within the Gran Caffè Quadri complex on Piazza San Marco, alongside the more casual Quadrino Bistro and the Gran Caffè itself. The fine dining restaurant occupies the upper rooms, where the square unfolds below and Venice is, quite simply, at its most itself. The setting demands a certain quality of cooking, and the Alajmo group has answered that demand with the same attention to Italian fine dining that has earned them recognition across multiple guides and countries.
The Quadri complex also hosts concerts in Piazza San Marco and private events, making it one of the more complete dining destinations in the city — capable of moving between an intimate dinner and a larger celebration without losing its character.
