The story
Right on Pohjoisesplanadi, a short walk from the Market Square with ferries passing at the waterfront and the Presidential Palace at your back, Olo has held a Michelin star since 2011. The setting is historic and unmistakably Helsinki, yet inside the mood is spare and warm rather than grand or stiff.
Olo's kitchen is guided by a clear conviction: the different seasons and the best northern ingredients, treated with uncompromised quality, are the foundation of everything on the plate. Traditional Finnish culinary knowledge meets modern technique, producing combinations that feel simultaneously brand new and deeply familiar. The result is fine dining that is assertive without being heavy, delicate without being timid.
Two tasting menus give guests a choice of depth. The full Menu Olo 2026 opens with peas served with goat milk and lump fish roe, moves through sugar-salted mackerel with green strawberries and shiro kombu, a steamed egg custard with Finnish asparagus and hazelnut, grilled scallop with preserved white currants and jalapeño, poached cod with ramson and vermouth sauce, and hay-smoked quail with morel and timur pepper sauce, before closing with a goat milk sherbet topped with Rossini's Black Label caviar and strawberries with sorrel and Sencha Sakura tea. The shorter Menu Olo Selected covers the same seasonal arc in fewer courses. Both menus are designed to be tailored readily for vegetarians and vegans — something the kitchen meets with genuine enthusiasm rather than reluctant accommodation.
The wine list balances great classics with carefully chosen seasonal pairings. Non-alcoholic drinks are prepared in-house by the bar team and are built to match each dish rather than simply replace wine.
White linen tablecloths, featherlight décor, and front-of-house staff in navy-style suits who perform sincerely and without ceremony. The White Guide, which awarded Olo its Masters level recognition in 2026, noted that the team greets on-the-spot menu changes with nothing but enthusiasm — a telling detail about the spirit of the place. Allow a good three hours for the full menu; the pace is deliberate and the attention to detail is remarkable throughout.
Olo is elegant without being rigid — exactly what its own motto, "the joy of doing, the joy of knowing, the joy of serving," promises.
