The story
At the top of Tuborg Harbour in Hellerup, just north of Copenhagen, Restaurant Address occupies a light-filled space where floor-to-ceiling glass frames the water and the masts of sailing yachts. When the weather obliges, the large terrace fills quickly – a sign of how warmly the place is regarded by the neighbourhood. Many guests are on first-name terms with the staff, yet the restaurant earns its White Guide recognition as a destination that rewards visitors from further afield just as well.
Address does not swear allegiance to any single food philosophy – the stated aim is simply good cooking, executed with craft and precision. Head chef Brian Pedersen leads a kitchen that draws on Danish and French traditions, producing food that is recognisably European in character without being rigidly classical. The approach shows in a menu that moves comfortably between a waffle topped with lumpfish roe, sour cream, red onion and chives and a more inventive beef tartare with beetroot, spring onion and fermented garlic. A vegetarian dish of al dente cauliflower, finished tableside with browned butter, hazelnut, sea urchin and truffle, illustrates how the kitchen can shift registers without losing coherence. Mains such as beef fillet with Jerusalem artichoke cream, potato gratin and pickled onions keep things grounded, while desserts – rhubarb with crème fraîche ice, warm crumble and lemon verbena, or a selection from the Arla Unika cheese board – close the meal on a confident note.
The daytime offer is equally considered. A smørrebrød list covers the classics – herring preparations, hand-peeled prawns, roast beef from chocolate-fed cattle, smoked salmon – alongside a full lunch menu with dishes like moules frites, foie gras terrine with Sauternes jelly, and beef medallions with duck-fat fries and béarnaise. The bar runs all day and into the evening, and the wine list, predominantly European, is chosen with care: a Sancerre Blanc from Lucien Crochet is the kind of thoughtful pairing the room does well.
The White Guide describes Address as "a solid luxury bistro that you can comfortably visit, even if you're not local" – a measured compliment that captures the place accurately. The international and European cooking here is rooted, seasonal and honest, the setting is handsome, and the overall experience is one of relaxed confidence rather than performance.
