The story
Morton's, The Steakhouse has been setting the standard for American fine dining since co-founders Arnie Morton and Klaus Fritsch opened the first location on State Street in Chicago in 1978. The origin story is disarmingly simple: Arnie tasted a hamburger Klaus had cooked at the Playboy Club in Montreal, burst into the kitchen demanding to know who made it, and declared it the best he'd ever had. They called it the "Million-Dollar Hamburger," and the partnership that followed grew into one of the most recognized steakhouse names in the world — now spanning more than 65 locations across the Americas, Asia, and beyond.
The Shanghai outpost sits on Level 4 of the IFC Mall in Lujiazui, one of the city's most prominent dining addresses. The room blends the classic sophistication the brand is known for with the kind of energy that suits a bustling financial district crowd — equally at home for a business lunch, a long dinner with friends, or a private event in one of the dedicated dining rooms.
The kitchen's reputation rests on USDA prime-aged beef — the top 2% of beef available in the United States — sourced from the same suppliers Morton's has worked with since day one. If a cut doesn't meet the restaurant's standards, it doesn't make it to the plate. Alongside the steaks, the menu extends into serious seafood territory: think Chilean Sea Bass, Oysters on the Half Shell, Colossal Shrimp, and Red King Crab Legs. Seasonal additions rotate through, with dishes like Prime Bavette Steak Frites, Wagyu Beef Stroganoff, and Lobster & Crab Cocktail appearing as limited-time features.
The wine program is a genuine point of pride. Morton's holds the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence and maintains a list of more than 300 wines, spanning rare cult classics, sommelier selections, and well-priced by-the-glass options. An on-site Wine Locker program allows guests to store personal bottles, and the team — including trained sommeliers and General Managers — is on hand to guide pairings. The bar program runs parallel, with hand-crafted cocktails and a dedicated bar menu rounding out the American steakhouse experience.
The private dining rooms make Morton's Shanghai a practical choice for corporate entertaining and special occasions alike. Catering and tailored event menus are available, and the restaurant has a track record of hosting everything from intimate wine dinners to larger celebratory gatherings — consistent with the brand's ethos of treating every guest as a VIP.
