The story
Locanda dell'Orso takes its name and spirit from an old Italian legend — the Innkeeper and the Bear — and translates that warmth into a modern Italian restaurant on West Pender Street in downtown Vancouver. The room is designed to feel like a generous Italian home: convivial, unhurried, and built around the table.
The kitchen's commitment is straightforward: pasta made in-house every day, every dish built from ingredients sourced either from local small farms or imported directly from the Italian regions where they're grown best. That dual loyalty — to British Columbia's producers and to Italian provenance — gives the food its particular character.
The aperitivo menu sets the tone with house-made focaccia, saffron arancini with lemon basil aioli, Burrata di Puglia served with seasonal accompaniments, and beef-and-pork polpette in pomodoro with pecorino. Pizzas range from a straightforward Margherita Classica with San Marzano tomatoes and fior di latte to the Carbo-Nera — fior di latte, crispy guanciale, egg yolk pecorino cream, and fresh Italian black truffle — a confident, playful nod to carbonara. Fresh pasta includes a white ragù of beef brisket, veal cheeks, and bone marrow over creste di gallo, finished with Parmigiano.
The cocktail list leans into Italian aperitivo culture — a Campari Shakerato with Malfy gin, an Aperol Sour, and the house Orso Martini built on saffron and lemon-infused vodka with Antica Formula Vermouth. A thoughtful zero-alcohol section mirrors every classic. The wine list is serious without being intimidating: Nebbiolo from Piemonte, Sangiovese from Toscana, Vermentino, Arneis, Pecorino, and selections from British Columbia sit alongside each other with equal confidence.
Gambero Rosso — the authoritative Italian food and wine guide — awarded Locanda dell'Orso a Fork in its 2025 edition, a meaningful endorsement for an Italian restaurant operating far outside Italy. It reflects what the kitchen is genuinely trying to do: bring the standards and soul of regional Italian cooking to Vancouver, without compromise.
