The story
Venga Cucina is the culminated vision of restaurateur Gino Benevenga. Hailing from the Campania region of Italy — from Sorrento specifically — Gino set out to bring a little piece of his motherland to Toronto's Junction neighbourhood on Dundas Street West. Working alongside Chef Chris Cantrell and a knowledgeable front-of-house team, the restaurant has earned recognition from Gambero Rosso in 2025, one of Italy's most authoritative food guides, a meaningful distinction for a restaurant rooted so deliberately in Italian tradition.
The heart of Venga Cucina is the pinsa romana — a Roman-style flatbread whose origins trace back to the rural communities outside the walls of Rome, where people ground cereals such as millet, barley, and spelt, adding salt and herbs to make a kind of ancient focaccia. Gino has perfected this craft and is one of only two certified pinsa romana masters in Canada. The result is a dough that delivers a crunchy exterior, light and airy pockets in the centre, and a notable digestibility — all achieved through a select blend of cereal flours and high hydration.
The pinsa romana menu at Venga reflects both tradition and local sensibility. Options range from a straightforward marinara with capers and oregano, to the bufalina with buffalo mozzarella, to more indulgent combinations like the fichi del sud — fresh figs, firm goat cheese, prosciutto, and balsamic crema — or the mortadella with pistachio, stracciatella, and crema di parmigiano.
The kitchen doesn't stop at flatbread. A full menu inspired by the dishes Gino grew up with in Sorrento, built around local ingredients, rounds out the evening. Antipasti include beef carpaccio, calamari fritti, burrata with roasted tomatoes and basil pesto, and mussels in white wine with focaccia. Fresh pasta dishes — carbonara with house-cured guanciale, pappardelle with wild boar ragù, rigatoni alla Norma — speak to a kitchen that takes its pasta seriously. Mains such as an overnight slow-cooked lamb shank and a selection of dolce, including torta caprese and house cannoli, complete a menu that moves confidently from start to finish.
Venga Cucina is available for private parties and catered events, making it a flexible venue beyond its regular dinner service. The restaurant operates with a two-hour dining window per table — a detail that keeps the room moving without feeling rushed. Whether dining in or ordering for takeaway, the experience is grounded in the same straightforward Italian cooking that earned Venga its place on Gambero Rosso's radar.
