The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Family Restaurant at the Top of the World

Nestled in Vienna's green Stadtpark at Am Heumarkt 2A, Steirereck is one of the most celebrated dining destinations on the planet. A fixture in The World's 50 Best Restaurants for over a decade — ranked as high as #9 and most recently at #33 in 2025 — this family-run institution embodies a singular vision: to express Austria on a plate with passion, curiosity, and an unwavering commitment to quality.

At the helm is chef Heinz Reitbauer, who took over the family restaurant nearly two decades ago and has since forged a deeply personal culinary identity. Rooted in research and sustainability, his modern Austrian cuisine brings forgotten ingredients back to life — rare breeds of meat and fish, near-extinct fruit and vegetable varieties, and the finest seasonal produce from the Reitbauer family's own farm at Pogusch. Exotic herbs are grown on the building's very own rooftop garden, and the kitchen draws on citrus fruits from the Imperial Orangeries — ingredients that carry a sense of place and history in every bite.

A Space Where History Meets the Contemporary

The original building dates from 1904, yet Steirereck feels unmistakably alive and forward-looking. A striking mirrored glass extension opens its walls in the warmer months, creating a semi al-fresco dining experience within the lush Stadtpark. Inside, blonde wood and concrete form an airy, sophisticated setting — historic and uber-contemporary at once, much like the cuisine itself.

Guiding the dining room with equal brilliance is Birgit Reitbauer, whose warmth, meticulous attention to detail, and deep knowledge permeate every corner of the service. Together, Birgit and Heinz have built an atmosphere that draws global gourmets and devoted locals alike.

The Art of the Table

The exquisite tasting menu showcases the full range of Steirereck's modern Austrian cuisine — dishes such as pheasant with yacon, gooseberry and kale; young artichoke with bergamot, nettle and chicken velouté; and kohlrabi with oats, apple and parsley. An à la carte option is also available.

But perhaps no ritual better captures the spirit of Steirereck than its legendary trolleys. A bread trolley presents 25 varieties, celebrating the creativity of Austrian bakers. Aperitif, tea, cheese, and digestif trolleys follow — and before Christmas, a dedicated trolley arrives bearing vanillekipferl, the beloved traditional Austrian crescent-shaped biscuit.

A Philosophy in Its Purest Form

As Steirereck itself puts it: "Im Herzen ein österreichisches Gasthaus — leidenschaftlich bestrebt, seinen Gästen eine wundervolle Zeit zu bereiten." At heart, an Austrian inn — passionately devoted to giving its guests a wonderful time. That spirit, refined to the highest possible level, is what makes Steirereck truly unforgettable.

The World's 50 Best Restaurants — 33

The dining room:Much like chef Heinz Reitbauer’s cuisine, the restaurant’s interior combines the historic with the uber-contemporary. The original building dates from 1904, but the striking mirrored glass extension has walls that raise up in the summer months to create semi al-fresco dining in Vienna’s green Stadtpark. The blonde wood and concrete interior is airy, stylish and sophisticated. World-leading service:Steirereck has long been a feature at the upper end of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list – and while that’s undoubtedly down to the chef’s vision and skill, it’s also a reflection of the outstanding and ever-evolving hospitality that is proffered, all orchestrated by doyenne of the dining room, Birgit Reitbauer. Her warmth, attention to detail and deep knowledge is reflected across the team and has created an atmosphere that attracts global gourmets as well as locals. Austria on a plate:Chef Reitbauer, who took over the family restaurant almost 20 years ago, has forged a unique culinary identity, which is heavily research-driven, sustainable and, of course, delicious. It’s also fundamentally Austrian, with numerous unknown or long-forgotten ingredients brought to the fore, including rare breeds of meat and fish and near-extinct fruit and vegetable varieties. Herbs and vegetables are grown on the building’s rooftop alongside its own beehives. Dishes on the exquisite tasting menu (there’s also an a la carte option) include pheasant with yacon, gooseberry and kale; young artichoke with bergamot, nettle and chicken velouté; and kohlrabi with oats, apple and parsley. Trolley action:This restaurant – and its customers – love a well-laden trolley. The bread trolley shows off the creativity of Austrian bakers, with 25 varieties on offer. There are also aperitif trolleys, a tea trolley, a cheese selection to die for, one national and one international digestif trolley and, before Christmas, one for vanillekipferl – the traditional Austrian crescent-shaped biscuit.
