Rosa's Canteen

Rosa Mitchell's Melbourne canteen serves traditional Sicilian-leaning Italian food from a sunlit Level 1 room above Little Bourke Street, Monday to Friday.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

Where Sicily Meets Little Bourke Street

On the corner of Little Bourke and Thomson Streets, one level above the leafy Melbourne streetscape, Rosa's Canteen has built a quiet reputation for something increasingly rare: traditional, wholesome Italian cooking with a genuine lean towards Sicilian flavour. The room overlooks the treetops, the atmosphere is comfortable rather than formal, and the food is the kind that makes you linger.

The name behind the canteen is Rosa Mitchell, and her presence shapes everything from the menu to the cooking classes and seasonal events the restaurant runs throughout the year — including, for the committed, a tour to Sicily itself in September 2026.

The Food

The Autumn 2026 menu reads like a considered tour of the Italian south. Antipasti open with grilled sardines dressed with pickled fennel, red onion, celery, pinenuts and currants — a classically Sicilian combination of sweet, sour and saline — alongside octopus carpaccio with pickled chilli, olives and mint, and meatballs simmered in sugo.

Pasta is made in-house where it counts: a chestnut fettuccine with duck and marsala ragù, ricotta and mushroom ravioli in porcini butter, and orecchiette with cauliflower, anchovy and pangrattato that could stand as a textbook example of Sicilian cucina povera done well. Mains push further — grilled lamb stuffed with pistachio and parsley, chicken agro dolce with couscous (a nod to the island's Arab culinary history), and fish in saffron broth with silverbeet.

Dessert ends as it should: cannolo filled with ricotta, honey, marsala and pistachio, alongside gelato, affogato, and a rotating tart of the day.

Recognition and Groups

Gambero Rosso, the authoritative Italian food guide, has recognised Rosa's Canteen with a Fork award — a mark of credibility that places it among a small number of Australian restaurants held to Italian dining standards.

The canteen is equally well set up for groups. For tables of eight or more, a set sharing menu at $85 per person moves through antipasti, pasta, secondi and dolci, with all dietary requirements accommodated with prior notice. A 10% service charge applies to function bookings.

Rosa's Canteen is open Monday to Friday, with the kitchen running from midday through to late. It is closed on weekends.
