A Boston Pedigree, South of the City

Lucca South Shore is part of the Lucca Restaurant Group, which has long been a fixture of Boston's dining scene. When the group expanded to Rockland, Massachusetts in 2019, it brought with it a serious kitchen led by Executive Chef Anthony Mazzotta — and a wine program strong enough to earn a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence in 2022.

The Chef Behind the Kitchen

Mazzotta's story is rooted in the kind of upbringing that shapes a cook before any formal training begins. He grew up in Norwood, Massachusetts, in an Italian household where sausages were cured at home, gardens supplied the kitchen, and wine was made by the family. That foundation informed everything that followed: studies at the New Hampshire College Culinary Institute, an early career at Le Meridien Hotel in Boston, and then a formative stretch at The French Laundry in Napa Valley and its New York counterpart, Per Se. Back in Boston, he worked with Ken Oringer at Toro and served as sous chef at EVOO in Cambridge before taking the helm at Lucca Back Bay.

When Lucca South Shore opened, Mazzotta was named its Executive Chef. His guiding philosophy is direct: simple preparations can outshine complicated ones, provided the ingredients are fresh and the technique is sound. That ethos runs through every plate.

Italian Cooking with Depth

The Italian cuisine here is supported by a drinks program that takes its cues from the same attention to detail. The wine list spans Italian and international bottles — from a Brunello di Montalcino to Finger Lakes Riesling — with thoughtful by-the-glass options that make it easy to explore. The cocktail menu is equally considered, featuring house-infused spirits and an Espresso Martini flight offered in four distinct variations.

Local craft beers from South Shore breweries like Widowmaker in Braintree and Untold Brewing in Scituate round out the bar, keeping things grounded in the community the restaurant serves.
