The story
Standing on the Old Albany Post Road in Garrison since 1761, The Bird & Bottle Inn carries more than 260 years of American history within its walls. Inspired by the beauty of the Hudson Highlands and the stories of those who came before, the inn was thoughtfully restored and brought back to life as a destination for both dining and overnight stays — a rare combination of genuine heritage and present-day hospitality.
The kitchen leans into farm-to-table American cuisine, with a menu that shifts with the seasons. Midweek, the inn offers a three-course prix fixe for $55 — an accessible way to experience the full range of the Bird's cooking on a Wednesday, Thursday, or Sunday evening. Sunday also brings brunch service from 11AM to 3PM, making it a natural anchor for a Hudson Valley weekend. The restaurant has been voted best restaurant in Putnam County in both 2024 and 2025, recognition that reflects a consistent commitment to quality rather than novelty.
Wine Spectator has recognized The Bird & Bottle Inn with its Award of Excellence for 2025, a distinction that speaks to the depth and care of the cellar. A sommelier is on hand to guide pairings, and the bar rounds out the offering with a concise list of classic cocktails — Manhattan, Martini, Dark & Stormy — alongside a rotating beer selection.
Five guest rooms on the historic property make it easy to extend an evening into a full stay. Midweek guests booking Wednesday or Thursday nights receive a $100 food and beverage credit to use in the restaurant — a genuine incentive to linger. The inn also accommodates private events and celebrations, and periodically closes to the public for weddings, a sign of how naturally the space lends itself to marking occasions.
The Bird & Bottle Inn is the kind of place that earns its reputation quietly, through good American food, a well-kept cellar, and a setting that no amount of design could replicate.
