The story
Masseria takes its name from the centuries-old walled agricultural estates of Puglia, the sun-drenched region of Southern Italy where chef and owner Nicholas Stefanelli's family heritage is rooted. Growing up in suburban Maryland with Greek and Italian grandparents, Stefanelli absorbed the flavors and rhythms of that heritage from an early age. A visit to Puglia made the connection visceral — the masseria way of life, where residents worked the land, made their own food, and welcomed guests with unaffected warmth, became the blueprint for his first restaurant.
The result is a 60-seat dining room in Washington's Union Market district that holds the rustic beauty of an Italian country estate alongside the industrial character of its neighborhood and the confident style of its chef-owner. The indoor sala looks directly into an open kitchen tiled in seafoam green, the covered pergola strings lights above rugged wood tables and colorful Mediterranean tile, and the courtyard — lush with ornamental grasses and aromatic herbs — offers open-air European ambiance by the fire pits.
Stefanelli's approach to Italian fine dining is rooted in the traditions of Southern Italy while drawing from the broader Italian culinary landscape. Fresh, hand-crafted paste, artfully prepared pesci, and inventive carne dishes build a progression that is both traditional and refined. Menus evolve with the seasons and with the kitchen's ongoing pursuit of precision — every ingredient sourced from local farms and European markets for freshness.
Guests currently choose between two tasting menu formats. Cinque is a five-course exploration of the flavors of Puglia and beyond; Sette is a seven-course immersion through seasonal ingredients and innovative technique. Both can be enhanced with a Signature Wine Pairing — built around indigenous varietals and hidden-gem producers — or the Riserva Wine Pairing, reserved for rare vintages and limited-production bottles. The bar offers an à la carte menu for walk-ins, and the caviar service, pairing Petrossian Royal Daurenki Caviar with freshly shucked Wellfleet oysters, is available as a standalone indulgence or a menu enhancement.
When Washington, DC received its first-ever Michelin Guide in 2016, Masseria was awarded one star — an honor the restaurant has held every year since. Gambero Rosso has recognized it with 2 Forks in 2025, and the restaurant has appeared on Washingtonian Magazine's Top 100 list and earned the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington's distinction of Formal Fine Dining Restaurant of the Year. Stefanelli himself approaches the role of host as a way of life rather than a profession, and that sensibility — taking the pretense out of fine Italian dining in favor of honest cooking and genuine hospitality — runs through every aspect of the experience.
Masseria accommodates private events across several distinct spaces: the Chef's Table seats up to six guests just inches from the open kitchen; the Pergola hosts up to 30 for a full tasting menu under its retractable roof; and a full restaurant takeover can seat up to 80 or host a standing reception of 150.
