The story
The building that houses 1833 Kitchen & Bar has its own place in American history. The Aurora Inn was built in 1833 by Colonel E.B. Morgan — a native of Aurora and co-founder of the New York Times — and by the mid-19th century it had become a favored overnight stop for travelers arriving by coach, boat, and rail along the Erie Canal, carrying agricultural goods from area farms to New York City. That agricultural heritage is not merely decorative. It is the operating philosophy of the restaurant today.
"Respect for ingredients, for farmers, and for our shared environment is the foundation for a good meal." That statement, from the restaurant itself, sets the tone for everything on the plate. The kitchen makes everything from scratch whenever possible and sources from local purveyors and responsible harvesters — a commitment that earns its credibility from the Finger Lakes region surrounding it, one of New York's most productive and biodiverse agricultural landscapes.
Executive Chef Eric Lamphere translates this ethos into creative menus that change with the seasons, keeping the cooking firmly in seasonal American territory without chasing trends for their own sake.
Wine Spectator recognized 1833 Kitchen & Bar with its Award of Excellence in 2023 — a fitting distinction for a restaurant situated in the heart of New York wine country. The wine list reflects the region, and the kitchen has built a tradition of multi-course wine dinners pairing local producers — including estates like Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery and Trestle Thirty One — with composed seasonal menus served in the Inn's Lakeside Room.
The cocktail program follows the same seasonal logic. Spring brings drinks like a savory Martini in the Garden (Hendrick's, tomato water, pickle brine, cucumber, balsamic) and the Bramble On, made with Seneca drum gin, Chambord, and lime — a nod to local distilling alongside the region's better-known wineries.
Dinner is served daily, with outdoor seating available when the season allows. For groups of 12 to 25, a three-course family-style menu starts at $85 per person — a practical and convivial option for the retreats and celebrations the Inns of Aurora regularly hosts. The setting, the history, and a kitchen genuinely committed to its place make 1833 Kitchen & Bar one of the more considered expressions of seasonal American dining in upstate New York.
