Heritage East at Culture ETX

Chef Lance McWhorter's Heritage East brings elevated East Texas Southern American cuisine to downtown Tyler, TX, with a Wine Spectator-recognized wine program.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Seventh-Generation East Texan Behind the Pass

Heritage East at Culture ETX is the latest chapter in Executive Chef and Owner Lance McWhorter's story—and it is a deeply personal one. A seventh-generation East Texan, McWhorter spent years in the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, and as a firefighter and high-threat security contractor before returning to professional kitchens. He then sharpened his craft at acclaimed Dallas establishments including FT33, Macellaio (now Lucia), and SĒR Steak + Spirits before moving to Tyler in 2019 to open Culture ETX.

In 2022 he added The Plaid Rabbit Social Club & Speakeasy, accessible through the restaurant. After five years, he reimagined the space entirely, transitioning to Heritage East—a more elegant, upscale concept built around one clear mission: honoring the food of his ancestors and introducing the world to elevated East Texas cuisine.

The Food and the People Behind It

The Southern American cooking here is rooted in heritage and shaped by season. The menu, McWhorter writes, is "always in motion, setting trends, following seasons, and adapting to current markets"—a farm-to-table sensibility expressed through fine dining technique. Two dishes have earned particular recognition beyond Tyler's city limits: the Heritage Pork Chop, which won the "Bite of the Season" on the Emmy Award-winning TV show The Texas Bucket List, and a chocolate mousse that debuted on Food Network's Chopped and has remained on the menu ever since. McWhorter also holds the title of Dallas "Prince of Pork" from Cochon 555, the prestigious heritage-breed pork cooking competition.

Sous Chef Dylan Sexton, a Jacksonville, Texas native, brings eight years of kitchen experience to the team. Mentored by McWhorter, Sexton's philosophy centers on creativity and the idea that food is a powerful way to bring people together—a sentiment that runs through everything Heritage East puts on the plate.

The Room and the Wine

The dining room is intentionally intimate—small enough that high chairs and strollers cannot be accommodated, which keeps the atmosphere focused and unhurried. Outdoor patio seating is available, and the restaurant hosts private parties and events. Lunch runs Tuesday through Friday and leans toward exceptional burgers, sandwiches, salads, and flatbreads. Dinner, served Tuesday through Saturday from 5 pm, steps into upscale casual fine dining territory. Saturday and Sunday brunch rounds out the week.

The wine program earned Heritage East a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence in 2025—recognition that reflects a serious, sommelier-led list. A full bar and craft beer selection complement the Southern American menu, and the restaurant does not permit BYOB.
