The story
Ristorante Lucca & Piano Lounge in Bordentown, New Jersey, sets out to do something specific: bring back the era when a night out demanded your best and rewarded you accordingly. The opulent interior, tableside service, and a dress code enforced with quiet confidence signal from the moment you arrive that this is Italian cuisine treated as a serious occasion rather than a casual transaction. Wine Spectator recognized the restaurant with its Best of Award of Excellence in 2024 — a distinction that reflects not just the depth of the cellar but the coherence of the entire dining experience.
The wine list is the spine of the restaurant's identity. Sommelier and Wine Director Daniel Bossi has assembled an exclusively Italian collection of more than 300 bottles — every single one graded at 90 points or higher, more than 20 of them exclusive to Lucca. The program spans Barbaresco and Barolo from Gaja, the DOCG sparkling wines of Franciacorta (Lucca claims the largest selection in the Northeast), and an extensive dessert wine roster that includes Vin Santos, Recciotos, and Passitos. All bottles are stored in a temperature-controlled cellar. The collection is fully endorsed by the Caterina de Medici Society, and Bossi — himself a vintner — designs food-and-wine pairings for every dish on the menu, as well as curated wine dinner events throughout the year.
General Manager Giuseppe "Pino" Algeri arrived from Calabria carrying decades of experience at landmark Philadelphia establishments including Le Bec Fin and Monte Carlo Living Room, where he hosted guests up to and including Luciano Pavarotti. He later helped launch Nunzio Ristorante in Collingswood before taking the helm here. Managing Partner William Burris brings 55 years of restaurant entrepreneurship to the ownership group alongside partners David Navazio, Sophia P. Furris, and Fredric Brotz.
The Piano Lounge operates as a distinct world within the restaurant. Music & Entertainment Director Dean Schneider — whose career spans more than 40 years across Philadelphia, New York, and Atlantic City — plays a Steinway grand several evenings a week, joined by Steve Beskrone and Lew Leabman on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, with guest vocalists appearing monthly.
On Mondays, the kitchen pivots to a different tradition: authentic Neapolitan pizza, made with slow-fermented dough, San Marzano tomatoes, and Mozzarella di Bufala, fired in a wood-burning brick oven. It is the restaurant's deliberate nod to the origins of Italian cuisine — restraint as a statement.
Beyond the fine dining menu, Ristorante Lucca offers a dedicated vegan plant-based menu, gluten-free options available on request, handcrafted seasonal cocktails, and traditional Italian desserts paired with after-dinner drinks. Catering and private event services are available for corporate and personal occasions.
