The story
Jeff and Kelly Ford opened J. Ford's Black Angus on October 16, 2007, with a clear mission: bring the quality of food, service, and spirits you'd normally only find in a major city to Terre Haute, Indiana — without requiring anyone to dress up for it. That balance, what the Fords call "casual and classy," defines everything from the atmosphere to the plate.
In 2016, they relocated to a historic building in downtown Terre Haute at 7th and Walnut, where Jeff and Kelly now live directly above the restaurant. It's that kind of full-commitment ownership that shapes the place day to day.
Executive Chef and co-owner Jeff Ford came up through serious kitchens. While studying business at Indiana State University, he worked as a Sous Chef at Larry Bird's MVP Club — where his cooking drew a written commendation from a Gourmet Magazine writer. He later served as Sous Chef at Churchill Downs and Executive Chef at the Audubon Country Club in Louisville, one of Kentucky's top private clubs. For twelve years before opening J. Ford's, he was the Certified Executive Chef and Director of Restaurant Operations at the Country Club of Terre Haute. He has held certification with the American Culinary Federation since 1997 and took the top award in the 2006 Ohio Valley Club Managers Association competition against eleven other country club chefs.
His path wasn't without detours. After graduating from Indiana State, Jeff was en route to culinary school in New York when he was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia. He spent nearly two years in and out of hospitals before recovering — a chapter that clearly sharpened his sense of purpose in the kitchen.
Kelly Ford runs front-of-house operations and brings her own deep industry background, including roles at Marriott Food Service, as a corporate server trainer for a restaurant chain, and fourteen years in corporate sales. She has also completed Level I Sommelier Certification, which shows directly in the wine program.
The restaurant's own kitchen commandment puts it plainly: "We wouldn't serve a customer anything we wouldn't be proud to serve our mother." That non-negotiable standard is what earns J. Ford's Black Angus its reputation as a quality-driven American steakhouse — one where a juicy New York Strip sits alongside creatively designed fish specials and a wine list that earned a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence.
The wine program is taken seriously here. Regular themed wine dinners — five-course evenings starting with an aperitif at 6:30 — run throughout the year and sell out well in advance. An October dinner with a Master Sommelier sold out before the full schedule was even announced.
The Fords are deliberate about what locally owned restaurants mean to a community. In their words, a good independent restaurant matters to a city the same way a community theater, a symphony, or a public park does. J. Ford's Black Angus isn't just serving American steakhouse cuisine in Terre Haute — it's making the case that Terre Haute deserves it.
