The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Wine Bar Born from Personal Memory

Barcelona Wine Bar traces its roots to 1995, when Sasa Mahr-Batuz and Andy Pforzheimer opened a tiny, 38-seat wine bar with a very specific vision. Mahr-Batuz drew on years of living in Spain and Portugal; Pforzheimer brought two decades of experience cooking at acclaimed restaurants in France, California, and New York. Together, they set out to recreate the feeling of an evening in Barcelona — not by copying what existed at the time, but by building exactly what they themselves loved.

From that first location, they made no compromises: sophisticated décor evoking Milan, SoHo, or Rio de Janeiro; simple, flavor-filled dishes built around olive oil, lemon, and smoky paprika; and a wine list weighted toward the lesser-known regions of Spain and Portugal.

Spanish Cuisine, Clean and Rustic

The food at Barcelona Wine Bar is described in the restaurant's own words as "clean and rustic" — Spanish cuisine shaped equally by Mediterranean tradition and South American influence, expressed through tapas meant for sharing. Dishes carry the hallmark flavors of the Iberian pantry, and the format invites the kind of relaxed, unhurried eating that tapas culture was always meant to encourage.

Nearly 400 Wines — and the Recognition to Match

The wine program is the other pillar of the Barcelona experience. Nearly 400 wines appear on the list, with particular depth in the regions of Spain and Portugal that most wine lists overlook. That commitment earned the Stamford location a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence — a recognition reserved for restaurants with well-chosen, well-organized lists that go meaningfully beyond the mainstream.

The team's passion for Spanish wine extends well beyond the cellar: the restaurant publishes deep-dive content on regions from Rioja and Priorat to Galicia and the Basque Country, and its sommeliers have been featured in outlets including Forbes.

Events and Private Dining

Beyond the dining room, Barcelona Wine Bar accommodates private parties and catered events, with outdoor seating available and a full private events program. Gift cards and branded merchandise are also available, reflecting a restaurant group that has grown well beyond its original 38 seats while holding onto the spirit that started it all.
