The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

Fine Dining with a Casual Elegance, Since 1986

Maxwell's Beach Cafe has been the premier dining destination of the Iowa Great Lakes for nearly four decades. Sitting right on Lake Street in Arnolds Park — across from the Historic Arnold's Park Amusement Park, backdoor to the region's best outdoor music venue, and with a front-row view of evening fireworks over the water — the setting alone is hard to beat. The restaurant operates across a covered heated patio, an open patio, and an indoor dining room, all shaped around what owners Steven and Leah Jensen describe as "casual elegance."

The People Behind the Kitchen

Steven and Leah Jensen took the reins with a clear intention: to build on the traditions and quality that have defined Maxwell's since its founding. Both have deep roots in the Okoboji area, having spent nearly every summer of their lives at the lake. Leah was recognized by the Iowa Restaurant Association as one of its 40 Women to Watch in the Hospitality Industry — a distinction that reflects her commitment to the community as much as to the restaurant. Head Chef Tim Stephenson brings seventeen years of Maxwell's-specific experience to the kitchen, continuously developing new dishes while honoring a menu refined over more than three decades.

What's on the Plate

The American cuisine at Maxwell's draws from near and far with real intention. Local Iowa beef and pork — including certified Angus beef and Berkshire pork — anchor the menu alongside fresh seafood flown in daily. Dinner highlights include a Beef Wellington wrapping filet mignon, sautéed spinach, and four-cheese Italian blend in puff pastry; a bone-in elk chop paired with apple-blueberry beurre rouge and candied pecans; and Hawaiian Ahi Tuna sourced fresh from Honolulu, sesame-coated and seared. The Macadamia Crusted Halibut — wild-caught and served with a spicy noodle spring roll and citrus ginger beurre blanc — is another standout. At lunch, the menu shifts to a more relaxed but equally considered range: a Lobster Roll with black garlic aioli, Blackened Mahi Tacos, and a Shaved Prime Rib Sandwich with creamy horseradish sauce.

Maxwell's Lobster Bisque appears on both menus and has clearly earned its place as a house signature. The wine list is extensive enough to have earned the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence consecutively from 2021 through 2025 — serious recognition for a lakeside café in northwest Iowa. Wine Wednesdays offer the featured bottle at half price with an entrée, making mid-week a particularly good time to visit.

A Seasonal Institution

Maxwell's operates seasonally, which only adds to its character as a genuine summer destination. Walk-ins are welcome, though reservations are preferred — a detail that speaks to how consistently full the dining room tends to be across its summer run.
