The story
Perry's Steakhouse & Grille has a story that begins not in a dining room but behind a meat counter. In 1979, Bob Perry opened a modest butcher shop in Houston, Texas — a neighborhood staple built on the straightforward promise of top-quality meat and honest service. By 1986, his son Chris Perry had joined him and persuaded him to add dining tables. The move proved so popular that Chris went on to open Perry's Steakhouse & Grille in 1993, and the brand has been growing ever since.
Today Perry's operates across more than twenty locations nationwide, and the Short Pump location on West Broad Street in Richmond brings that same lineage to Virginia. The Wine Spectator Award of Excellence — earned in 2024 — reflects the seriousness with which Perry's approaches not just the plate but the full dining experience, including a portfolio of Reserve Wines that complements the steakhouse menu.
Perry's Steakhouse is built around USDA Prime beef, and the kitchen's commitment to that standard runs through every service. The dining room experience centers on tableside carvings — most famously the Perry's Famous Pork Chop, a signature that has followed the brand from its earliest days. Handcrafted cocktails and an extensive wine list round out the offering, while Perry's Bar 79 provides a more relaxed setting for bar bites, craft beer, and an aperitif or a nightcap.
The restaurant describes its approach as a Rare and Well Done® experience — a phrase that captures both the precision applied to each cut and the level of hospitality expected of every table interaction.
Beyond the main dining room, the Short Pump location is equipped for private parties, banqueting, and corporate events, with catering and takeaway options available as well. Outdoor seating extends the space when the season allows. Whether the occasion is a business dinner or a celebration, the steakhouse format — attentive staff, quality sourced ingredients, and a wine list recognized by Wine Spectator — provides a reliable and polished backdrop.
Perry's commitment to community is also part of its identity; the group supports local food banks, fine arts organizations, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation across the markets where it operates.
