The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Landmark with a Story

The building at 12401 Johnson Drive has been part of the Kansas City area's fabric for well over a century. Belgian immigrant Remi Caenen began construction in 1905, hand-quarrying stone from his own quarry to build a grand home modeled after Chateau Chavaniac in France. Completed in 1907, the fourteen-room structure featured four fireplaces and two winding staircases. It passed through decades of reinvention — a sanitarium, a restaurant, a nightclub — before being added to the Kansas Register of Historic Places in 2006. Today, Wandering Vine at the Castle occupies and honors that history, bringing elevated contemporary American dining into walls that have stood for more than a hundred years.

The People Behind It

The hosts describe themselves as Kansas City natives who met in high school, married over forty-five years ago, and spent decades traveling through more than forty countries, finding everywhere that "joy and celebration are linked to the food and drink." That philosophy — that great food and wine are expressions of people and culture — shapes everything at the Castle.

Executing that vision in the kitchen is Executive Chef Bryan Sparks, who brings more than twenty years of industry experience to the role. His path was anything but conventional: he started washing dishes at sixteen, spent seven years in the U.S. Coast Guard where he discovered his passion for cooking, then sharpened his craft at respected Kansas City establishments including Bluestem, Rye, and Jax Fish House. He later worked as a chef consultant across a range of concepts before eventually connecting with the owners and finding an immediate alignment with the Wandering Vine vision.

What's on the Table

The menu is rooted in creative contemporary American cooking — seasonally focused and made fresh, with exceptional steaks and chops, the freshest fish and seafood, and house-made pastas. The kitchen rotates with the seasons, and the spring menu is currently the focus. The approach is described plainly as "creative classics," which means familiar forms executed with care and ingredient-driven precision rather than novelty for its own sake.

The Wine Program

Wine is not an afterthought here — it is woven into the restaurant's identity from the name outward. The wine list earned a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence in 2024, a recognition that reflects both the breadth of the selection and the seriousness with which it is curated. The program spans global wine regions while also championing local producers: the Castle collaborates exclusively with Grace Hill Winery, a Kansas producer with over twenty years of experience, to craft Castle-exclusive wines that blend West Coast grapes with Kansas-grown fruit.

The Setting and Occasions

The warm, stone-walled rooms of the Castle make it the Kansas City area's go-to for anniversaries, proposals, and milestone celebrations. Private events can be accommodated across the building's variety of rooms. Beyond dinner service, the Castle also hosts a Saturday Royal Tea and a Sunday brunch, as well as themed dinners that use wine as a lens for exploring different cultures and regions — all without leaving Shawnee. It was also the first restaurant in Kansas to be recognized as a Distinguished Independent Restaurant of North America, a distinction that speaks to its standing in the broader American dining landscape.
