The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

The Chef Behind the Name

Chef Marcellino Verzino's story begins on a family farm in Campania, Italy. After the early loss of his mother, Carmela, he started cooking for his family at eleven years old – a beginning that was, as he puts it, not a choice but a destiny. By twenty he was opening restaurants in Italian vacation regions, then running his own Bar/Bistro in Rome, where he also met his wife, Sima. Seven years in New York followed before the two settled in Scottsdale, where Marcellino Ristorante has become one of Old Town's most recognized dining rooms.

That trajectory – from a Campanian farm to Rome to New York to the Arizona desert – shows up directly in the food. The New York Times recognized him with its "Award of Excellence," the James Beard Foundation granted him an "Honorary Recognition" for outstanding contribution, and the Arizona Republic awarded him five stars alongside titles for Best Italian Restaurant and Best Hand Crafted Pasta. More recently, Gambero Rosso, Italy's most authoritative food and wine guide, awarded the restaurant 2 Forks in its 2025 edition – a mark of credibility that carries particular weight for an Italian fine dining kitchen operating outside Italy.

What's on the Table

The menu is built around what Chef Marcellino calls cuisine alla Marcellino: fresh, seasonal ingredients handled with respect for their origins, and flavors that remain truthful to Italian tradition rather than adapted for broader tastes. Hand-made fresh pastas are a cornerstone, alongside Mediterranean seafood balanced for precision rather than abundance, and a selection of carne and imported wild game. The approach is consistent whether guests dine in or order through the restaurant's take-home option, where the same handcrafted standards apply.

The Full Experience

Dining at Marcellino is framed as a complete Italian evening rather than just a meal. Sima Verzino – who helped build the restaurant from the ground up – now performs regularly with her All Star Trio, bringing jazz-inflected, R&B-driven live music to the room on Thursday and Saturday evenings. Guest musicians and internationally acclaimed performers also appear throughout the season. The Verzinos are deliberate about pacing: each reservation is treated as protected time, in keeping with the Italian conviction that a meal shared with family or friends is not something to be rushed.

Private dining, wine pairing, and cooking classes round out what is on offer, making Marcellino Ristorante a destination as much for a special occasion as for a regular evening in Old Town Scottsdale.
