The story
Established in 2013 on Sarasota's South Tamiami Trail, Marcello's Ristorante Italiano is the product of one chef's lifelong commitment to Italian cooking. Chef-owner Marcello is, as Sarasota Magazine put it, the restaurant's "sole cook — there's no team of assistants; every meal is prepared by him alone." That fact alone sets the tone for everything here.
The dining room holds just nine tables, plus a wine room that seats twelve — a space Sarasota Magazine called something that "must be seen to be believed." The intimacy is deliberate. With so few seats, every guest receives focused attention, and every plate reflects the same hands-on care. The restaurant's Italian cuisine is, in the chef's own words, built on "family recipes with applied techniques," and every dish is created daily using locally sourced ingredients.
Because the menu follows what's fresh rather than what's fixed, no two visits are quite alike. The kitchen consistently features the finest local fish, hand-cut veal, and homemade pasta — but the specific preparations shift with the season and the market. On any given evening, that might mean Gulf Shrimp & Lobster Pappardelle, Hudson Valley Duck Breast, Whole Yellowtail Snapper, or Braised Pork Shank Osso Buco. Starters range from Burrata with Shaved Truffle to a tableside Caesar Salad and Grilled Octopus. Desserts hold to Italian tradition: Tiramisu, Cannoli, Tartufo, and a Limoncello Sorbet.
Marcello's holds Wine Spectator's Best of Award of Excellence — a distinction that, as Sarasota Magazine noted, makes it the only Italian restaurant in the area to carry that honor. The wine room is not an afterthought; it is a centerpiece, and the cellar behind it clearly earns the recognition.
Cozy, romantic, and uncompromisingly food-centric — this is Italian cuisine prepared with the kind of singular focus that only a chef cooking alone in a small room can sustain. Reservations are strongly encouraged given the limited seating, and the experience rewards those who plan ahead.
