The story
The name means "oil and lemon" — two elemental ingredients of southern Italian cooking — yet as Wine Spectator once noted, there is nothing typical or plain about what comes out of the kitchen at Olio e Limone Ristorante. Situated in downtown Santa Barbara's historic arts and dining district on West Victoria Street, this is a room that takes Italian cuisine seriously without taking itself too seriously.
Chef Alberto Morello draws from the full breadth of Italy, but brings particular passion to Sicilian dishes. One that has drawn attention is the quaglie con salsiccia, polenta e caponata — roasted quails stuffed with sausage, served alongside polenta and a Sicilian-style ratatouille. The kitchen also turns out seafood preparations, handmade pasta, and a veal chop that appears regularly in the restaurant's own photography. The cooking is grounded in specific regional traditions rather than a generic Italian idiom.
The dining room is tasteful in its simplicity. A glass wall reveals the wine cellar beyond — a deliberate architectural choice that signals how seriously the list is taken here. Co-owner Elaine Morello curates a selection that runs heavily Italian, moving past the expected Tuscany and Piedmont to include bottles from Veneto, Sicily, and beyond, alongside a considered nod to California producers. That wine program earned Olio e Limone the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence — recognition for a list that is clearly presented and well-matched to the food on the plate. As Elaine Morello put it: "We have a lot of regulars who are knowledgeable, and they love the list."
Beyond the main dining room, the restaurant offers private dining in the Cucina Room, with regional Italian menus named for Toscana, Friuli, Veneto, Sicilia, and Piemonte — a useful map of the kitchen's range. Lunch is served Monday through Saturday; dinner runs nightly. The adjacent Olio Bottega handles Italian breakfast and retail next door, while Olio Pizzeria occupies a separate suite — a reminder that Olio e Limone is its own distinct destination, focused on fine Italian dining rather than casual fare.
