The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

Orange County's Most Unique Culinary Experience Since 1972

The Hobbit has been a fixture on East Chapman Avenue in Orange, California for over five decades, earning a reputation as one of the most distinctive fine dining destinations in Southern California. Named among Town & Country's 100 Best Restaurants in America and recognized by Wine Spectator with its Best of Award of Excellence, the restaurant draws guests who come not just for a meal, but for an evening.

A Single Seating, Six Courses, Four Hours

The format is deliberate and unhurried. One seating per night — Wednesday through Sunday at 7:00 PM — and a six-course modern French prix-fixe menu priced at $150 per person. The experience runs approximately four hours, and the kitchen's guiding philosophy is stated plainly: "Celebrate the Seasons, Honor the Ingredients."

The evening begins in the wine cellar with seasonal cocktails — think a Koval Dry Gin lavender French 75 or a Kikori Rice Whiskey yuzu sparkling — before guests move to the dining room for the full progression. The current menu opens with an amuse bouche of three seasonal bites served with complimentary Hobbit "Champagne," followed by an olive oil poached steelhead with cauliflower, pickled vegetable relish, and Tsar Nicoulai roe. A braised lamb ragù over scratch cavatelli comes next, before a palate-cleansing sorbet marks the midpoint. The main course offers a choice between O'Connor Ranch filet mignon with potato rosti and red wine demi-glace, or pan-seared white sea bass with wild mushroom spätzle and lobster velouté. The meal closes with a chocolate ganache tart over graham cracker crust with hazelnut and salted caramel.

Sommelier Amy Cody oversees a wine pairing program ($75 per person) that moves thoughtfully across regions — a Rhône blend from Paso Robles, a Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, a 2018 Napa Cabernet, and an Alsatian Riesling among the current selections.

The Team Behind the Table

Owner and operator Matthew McKinney leads the restaurant through what the team describes as a new chapter, following a recently completed renovation and grand reopening. Executive Chef Nick Torgerson drives the seasonal French menu, with Sous Chef Marco Morales rounding out the kitchen. The dress code is strictly enforced — a signal that the Hobbit takes the full experience seriously, from first cocktail to final bite.

Private Dining and Events

Beyond its regular service, the Hobbit accommodates private parties and catered events, with dedicated space and staff support for special occasions. It is the kind of room — and the kind of French dining experience — that marks an anniversary, a milestone, or simply an evening worth remembering.
