Crafted with passion, served with love

A Story That Started With a Hamburger

Morton's The Steakhouse traces its origins to an unlikely moment: co-founders Arnie Morton and Klaus Fritsch, both working at the Playboy Club in Montreal, bonded over what Arnie called the best hamburger he'd ever tasted — the "Million-Dollar Hamburger." That encounter planted the seed for a steakhouse that opened its first doors on State Street in Chicago in 1978. Today, the San Francisco location on Post Street carries forward the same founding principles: quality, consistency, and genuine hospitality.

The Steakhouse Standard

The centerpiece of any visit is the beef. Morton's sources USDA Prime-aged cuts — representing the top 2% of beef available in the United States — from the same suppliers the brand has relied on since day one. If a cut doesn't meet Morton's standards, it doesn't reach the plate. The menu extends well beyond steak, with fresh seafood options including Chilean Sea Bass, Oysters on the Half Shell, Colossal Shrimp, and Red King Crab Legs. Seasonal additions rotate in regularly; current highlights include a Prime Bavette Steak Frites, Wagyu Beef Stroganoff, and Oysters Rockefeller.

The Bar and the Wine Program

Bar 12-21 runs alongside the dining room with hand-crafted cocktails, imported and local craft brews, and chef-selected bar bites. The wine program is a particular point of pride: the San Francisco location holds the Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence, and the list spans more than 300 labels — from value-driven by-the-glass pours to rare cult favorites. An on-site Wine Locker program lets committed guests store personal selections, and a dedicated Sommelier team is on hand to guide pairings. Morton's has also introduced its own private label, "State & Rush," sourced from Oak Ridge Winery in Lodi, California, available in Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir.

Private Dining and Events

The elegant private dining rooms accommodate everything from business functions to celebratory dinners, with catering and bespoke menus available. Morton's also partners with athletes and charitable foundations for its Prime Events series — seasonal wine dinners and exclusive one-of-a-kind menus that make use of the intimate private spaces. Whether the occasion calls for cocktails at the bar or a formal seated dinner, this San Francisco steakhouse is built to handle both with equal ease.
