The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Constant Work in Progress

Twenty-six years after opening on San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf, Restaurant Gary Danko remains one of the city's most consistently celebrated dining destinations. "You don't just open a great restaurant," Chef Gary Danko has said. "It's a constant work in progress." That philosophy shows — in the kitchen, in the dining room, and in the enduring recognition the restaurant has earned, including a Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star rating, a Wine Spectator Grand Award, and multiple James Beard Foundation Awards for Best New Restaurant, Best Service, and Best Chef – California.

The Chef Behind the Name

Gary Danko's path to the top of American-French cuisine is rooted in a genuine culinary education. He grew up watching his Louisiana-born mother balance flavors with simple seasonings and farm-fresh ingredients in an upstate New York kitchen — an early lesson that never left him. A 1977 graduate of the Culinary Institute of Hyde Park, he later studied under French-born Madeleine Kamman, whose rigorous grounding in French technique, science, and culinary history shaped the foundation of his career. Before opening his own restaurant, Danko led kitchens at Beringer Vineyards and The Ritz-Carlton San Francisco, building close relationships with artisanal cheese, meat, and produce suppliers that continue to define his sourcing today.

The Experience

The dining room at Gary Danko is warm and enveloping — orchids overhead, vibrant artworks on the walls, an atmosphere that feels both intimate and theatrical. The cuisine is American-French in its bones: classical technique applied to the seasonal, locally grown and raised ingredients of the Bay Area, with influences drawn from culinary traditions around the world. Guests are invited to order a minimum of three courses, and the restaurant holds a coveted Relais & Châteaux designation, a mark of the standard held in both hospitality and craft.

A private dining room accommodates five to ten guests for celebrations or business dinners, with dedicated staff and two evening seatings available.
