The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A San Francisco Table That Left Its Mark

For fifteen years, Coi held a singular place on San Francisco's dining map. Situated on Broadway in the North Beach neighborhood, the restaurant built a reputation for California cuisine that was precise, ingredient-driven, and quietly daring — earning recognition as one of the world's 50 best restaurants in 2014, a distinction that put it in rare company globally.

The restaurant closed with a brief, gracious note from Daniel — the name signed at the bottom of the announcement on the site — thanking everyone who had contributed to or dined at Coi over its run. It was a fitting coda for a place that clearly valued the human side of hospitality as much as the food itself.

What Arrived at the Table

The tasting menu, priced at $250, read as a confident expression of modern California cuisine: grounded in the region's exceptional produce and seafood, but unafraid to reach further. Grilled seaweed bread arrived with oyster mayo and wild greens. Kaluga caviar was paired with avocado, beet, and pistachio oil. Young carrots were roasted in coffee beans and finished with mandarin and Thai basil — a combination that captured the kitchen's approach: familiar ingredients made to do unfamiliar things.

The seafood courses showed particular ambition. Dungeness crab appeared in a beef tendon soup with finger lime, shiinko pear, and cilantro. Abalone was wrapped in chicken mousse and yuba, served with a sauce flavored with dried scallop and thyme. A mushroom broth scented with pine offered a quieter, more contemplative moment mid-meal. The roasted whole duck — served with mustards, spices, seeds, and griddled rice — anchored the savory progression before dessert moved through frozen lime marshmallow with coal-toasted meringue and silken white chocolate with cocoa and kiwi.

The Space and Private Dining

Beyond the main dining room, Coi offered private and semi-private dining for parties of seven or more, making it a considered choice for special occasions that called for something beyond the ordinary. That combination of intimacy and culinary seriousness was part of what made the restaurant endure.

Coi is now closed, but its fifteen-year run on Broadway remains a reference point for what California cuisine, at its most thoughtful, can look like.
