Atelier Crenn

Dominique Crenn's three-Michelin-starred San Francisco restaurant turns each dinner into poetry — a 14-course oceanic journey celebrating artistry, sustainability, and French-Californian finesse.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

Poetry on a Plate

Nestled behind a quietly minimalist facade on Fillmore Street in San Francisco's Cow Hollow district, Atelier Crenn is one of the world's most singular dining experiences. Conceived by chef and owner Dominique Crenn as an ode to "poetic culinaria," the restaurant opened in 2011 as a deeply personal project — a place to express her heritage, honor her family, and push the boundaries of fine dining. Her father's paintings grace the walls, while memories of her mother's garden in France breathe life into every seasonal menu.

A Historic Achievement

Atelier Crenn earned its first Michelin Star within a year of opening, in October 2011. By 2012, Crenn had made history as the first female chef in the United States to receive two Michelin Stars, and in November 2018 she broke her own record, becoming the first female chef in the US to earn three Michelin Stars. The restaurant has also been recognized by Forbes Travel Guide with a Five-Star award in 2026, and ranked among The World's 50 Best Restaurants — 35th in 2019 and 48th in 2021.

An Evening of Poetic Culinaria

In place of a traditional menu, guests receive a poem written by Crenn herself, with each line representing one of the 14 courses. As each dish arrives, the team narrates its origins and the thought process behind it, weaving culinary storytelling into every moment. The ocean-focused menu draws on Crenn's childhood summers in Brittany and her deep respect for the sea, showcasing pristine seafood alongside the finest produce from local farmers and from Bleu Belle Farm — her own Sonoma property, cultivated using regenerative agriculture practices.

The Artists Behind the Table

Chef Pâtissier Juan Contreras, who co-opened the restaurant with Crenn in 2011, crafts desserts designed to trigger memories and evoke emotions. A two-time James Beard Award finalist for Outstanding Pastry Chef (2019 and 2020), Contreras draws inspiration from nature, landscapes, and aromas to close each meal on a note of wonder.

Craft, Sustainability, and Elegance

Atelier Crenn holds the distinction of being the first restaurant in the United States to achieve Plastic Free certification, a testament to Crenn's unwavering commitment to the planet. Ethical sourcing is equally paramount: table butter is produced from a single cow at Animal Farm Creamery, while San Martin Milk Company supplies cream for the restaurant's beloved brioche. Thoughtful wine pairings — with a particularly exceptional champagne selection — complement each course, celebrating both iconic and under-explored producers. The experience lasts two to three hours and welcomes guests in casual-elegant attire, warmly, as though entering Crenn's own home.
