The story
Morton's The Steakhouse traces its origins to an unlikely moment: co-founders Arnie Morton and Klaus Fritsch, both working at the Playboy Club in Montreal, connected over a hamburger so good that Arnie burst into the kitchen demanding to know who cooked it. That burger — quickly dubbed the "Million-Dollar Hamburger" — sparked a partnership that led to the first Morton's opening on State Street in Chicago in 1978. More than four decades later, the brand has grown to over 65 locations worldwide, while holding to the same founding principles: quality, consistency, and genuine hospitality.
The San Diego location on J Street carries that legacy forward, offering the same commitment to sourcing that has defined Morton's since day one.
Morton's works exclusively with long-standing suppliers who select the top of their inventory for the brand — USDA Prime-aged beef, representing the top 2% of beef available in the United States. If a cut doesn't meet Morton's standards, it doesn't make it to the plate. The steakhouse also extends well beyond beef: Chilean Sea Bass, Oysters on the Half Shell, Colossal Shrimp, and Red King Crab Legs round out a menu designed for both devoted carnivores and those who prefer lighter fare. Seasonal additions — such as Prime Bavette Steak Frites, Wagyu Beef Stroganoff, and Oysters Rockefeller — keep the menu fresh without abandoning the classics.
The wine program at Morton's is taken seriously enough to earn the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, a recognition that reflects a list of more than 300 wines spanning rare vintages, cult favorites, and sommelier-selected value picks. The San Diego location offers private wine lockers for regular guests, and the on-site team — including General Managers and Sommeliers — is available to guide pairings for any course or palate. Morton's has also introduced "State & Rush," a private label honoring its Chicago roots, featuring a Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir sourced from Oak Ridge Winery in Lodi, California.
The atmosphere blends classic and contemporary — a bar scene driven by hand-crafted cocktails alongside elegant dining rooms suited to business dinners, celebrations, or a quiet evening out. Private dining rooms accommodate events of varying scales, and Morton's partners with athletes and foundations for charitable events, seasonal wine dinners, and exclusive one-of-a-kind menus. Whether the occasion calls for cocktails at Bar 12-21 or a seated dinner in a private room, this steakhouse in San Diego is built to handle both with equal care.
