The story
The story of Morton's begins with an unlikely spark. Co-founders Arnie Morton and Klaus Fritsch first crossed paths at the Playboy Club in Montreal, where Klaus cooked a hamburger that stopped Arnie in his tracks. He burst into the kitchen demanding to know who made it — and when Klaus stepped forward, Arnie declared it the best he'd ever tasted. They called it the "Million-Dollar Hamburger," and the partnership it ignited led to the opening of the first Morton's on State Street in Chicago in 1978. Today the brand spans more than 65 locations worldwide, with San Antonio's outpost on East Crockett Street carrying that same founding commitment: quality, consistency, and genuine hospitality.
Morton's built its reputation on USDA prime-aged beef — the top 2% of beef available in the United States. The same suppliers have been used since day one, and their best inventory is selected specifically for Morton's. If it doesn't meet the restaurant's standards, it simply doesn't get cut. The menu extends well beyond the grill: Chilean sea bass, oysters on the half shell, colossal shrimp, and red king crab legs round out a menu that pairs the finest from land and sea. Seasonal additions — including a Prime Bavette Steak Frites, Wagyu Beef Stroganoff, Oysters Rockefeller, and a Lobster & Crab Cocktail — keep things fresh for returning guests.
The San Antonio location holds the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, a recognition that reflects a list of more than 300 wines spanning exclusive vintages, sommelier selections, and cult favorites. Private wine lockers are available on-site, and the team — including knowledgeable general managers and sommeliers — is always on hand to guide pairings. Morton's has also introduced "State & Rush," a private label honoring its Chicago roots, offering a Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir sourced from Oak Ridge Winery in Lodi, California.
Whether the visit calls for cocktails at the Bar 12-21, a business dinner in one of the intimate private dining rooms, or a special event with catering, this San Antonio steakhouse accommodates the full range. Morton's partners with athletes and foundations for exclusive Prime Events, and the dining rooms host seasonal wine dinners alongside one-of-a-kind menus. The atmosphere blends classic elegance with a lively bar scene — sophisticated without being stiff, and attentive without being formal.
