The story
Perched above the World's Longest Porch and looking out over the Straits of Mackinac, the Main Dining Room at Grand Hotel — known as Salle à Manger — is the kind of place where a meal is treated as an occasion. The setting is grand in the most literal sense: sweeping water views, an elegant room that shifts character from morning through evening, and a staff described by the hotel itself as "the heart of the dining room," welcoming guests back year after year with the warmth of returning home.
The day begins at breakfast, the hotel's primary gathering for the morning, offering both classic and unexpected dishes. Midday brings the Grand Luncheon Experience — a lavish spread that blends tradition with innovation, described as a fusion of yesterday and tomorrow.
Come evening, the room transforms entirely. A dress code takes effect, the Grand Hotel Orchestra performs live, and a rotating five-course dinner menu takes center stage. The cooking is locally focused and globally artistic — American and French sensibilities woven together in dishes like Crab Crusted Great Lakes Walleye with sweet corn succotash and lemon butter, Smoked Great Lakes Trout Fritter with pickled okra and lemon scallion crème fraîche, and Duck Confit Arancini over porcini mushroom polenta. Michigan ingredients appear throughout, from wild rice in the smoked chicken soup to cherry mostardo alongside a charred golden beet crudo.
No dinner here ends without the Grand Pecan Ball with fudge sauce — a signature dessert that debuted in 1947 and remains so beloved that guests consume more than 60,000 of them each season.
The dining room holds the Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence, a distinction earned through a list of over 350 selections curated by Master Sommelier Elizabeth Schweitzer. The list spans the world and is designed to suit every occasion, palate, and budget — a serious wine program matched to serious American-French cooking.
Many dishes can be adapted to be gluten-free or vegetarian, and the kitchen is transparent about accommodating requests.
