Charlie's

Chef Elliot Bell's community-driven Californian restaurant in St. Helena, honored with a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

Locally Sourced, Globally Inspired

On Railroad Avenue in the heart of St. Helena, Charlie's is a family-run neighborhood restaurant built around a clear conviction: the Napa Valley's extraordinary bounty deserves to be celebrated with curiosity and craft. The cooking is Californian in its roots — ingredient-led, seasonally honest — but the flavors draw from a wider world, reflecting the life and travels of the person who built it.

The Chef Behind the Name

Charlie's is the project of Elliot Bell, chef and owner, who named the restaurant after his son. Originally from New Zealand, Bell came to cooking through dishwashing and line positions in a small Iowa town before pursuing formal training in hospitality management at the University of New Hampshire and the Glion Institute of Higher Education in Switzerland. His career took him through notable kitchens in Boston, Seattle, and New York — including Danny Meyer's Gramercy Tavern — before landing him in Napa Valley, where he spent the better part of a decade as Executive Sous Chef at Thomas Keller's The French Laundry.

He has lived in St. Helena for more than ten years with his family, and serves as a volunteer firefighter with the local fire department. That grounding in community is not incidental — it shapes how Charlie's operates, from its sourcing relationships to its long-term goals for its team.

"Inspired by my son, I wanted to create a restaurant that shares his same tireless energy, and constant desire to learn and grow," Bell has said. "Charlie's looks forward to building long-term, sustainable careers for our team and similarly enduring relationships with our vendors, purveyors, and community."

The Table and the Wine List

The supplier list at Charlie's reads like a map of Northern California's finest producers: Flannery Beef, Drifters Fish, Knights Valley Wagyu, Wolfe Ranch Quail, Silverado Trail Strawberries, Wine Forest Mushrooms, Regiis Ova caviar, and Urbani Truffles, among many others. This commitment to sourcing with intention is central to the American and Californian cooking that comes out of the kitchen.

The wine program has earned a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence for 2025 — recognition that places Charlie's among a select group of restaurants with lists distinguished for depth, breadth, and thoughtful curation. In a valley defined by wine, that distinction carries real weight.

All Day, Every Day

Charlie's runs a full day of service — weekend brunch, daily lunch, a happy hour that runs every afternoon, dinner seven nights a week, and late-night service Thursday through Saturday. The format is deliberately accessible, the kind of place that works as a weekday lunch spot and a proper dinner destination in equal measure. Outdoor seating and takeaway options extend that flexibility further.
