The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Raleigh Institution Built on Memory

The Angus Barn has been the defining steakhouse of Raleigh, North Carolina for generations. Owner Van Eure, who received the IFMA Gold Plate — the food service industry's highest honor — in 2004, and the National Restaurant Association's Industry Legends Award in 2019, has shaped the Barn around a single conviction: "We are in the memory business - making and creating unforgettable memories for you - our guest." That philosophy permeates every corner of the place, from the famous Wild Turkey Lounge to the castle-like dining rooms downstairs.

The Food: Aged Beef, Fresh Seafood, and Southern Roots

Executive Chef Scott James and his team turn out close to 20,000 aged and grilled steaks every month. The beef is Certified Black Angus, aged in-house, and available in nine cuts — from a bacon-wrapped Filet Mignon and a 15 oz. New York Strip to the signature Bone-in Tomahawk, a 42-plus-ounce aged ribeye charred and encrusted in the house seasoning, recommended for two. Steaks can be finished Oscar-style with crabmeat, asparagus and hollandaise, or simply with garlic butter at no charge.

Beyond the steakhouse classics, the menu ranges across fresh seafood — Maine Lobster Tail, Carolina Coastal Mahi Mahi with lemon basil butter, Blackened Yellowfin Tuna — and the famous AB BBQ ribs with the house sauce. Desserts are made in-house; the chocolate chess pie and blackberry cobbler have become landmarks in their own right. Ingredients are sourced with care: local North Carolina agriculture is a stated priority, herbs come from the Barn's own garden, and all vendors are held to strict standards.

The Wine Cellar and the Lounges

Wine Spectator has recognized the Angus Barn with its Grand Award — the publication's top honor for outstanding wine lists in the world — continuously since 1989, a distinction that requires the list to be judged and reaffirmed every year. The cellar also hosts Thad's Room, a private dining space within the wine cellar itself.

The Wild Turkey Lounge, open daily from 3 pm, has been described by Entrepreneur Magazine as "a cross-sectional hotbed of local politicos, big pharma executives and tech tycoons" since 1984. It carries one of the finest wine lists in the US alongside premium spirits, North Carolina craft beers, and a full lounge menu with the same aged-beef and seafood lineup served in the main dining rooms.

Rustic Elegance, Seriously Considered

Southern Living once captured the scene precisely: checked tablecloths and farm tools upstairs, a tapestried dining room and the award-winning wine cellar below, a humidor near the host stand and helium balloons for kids nearby. The Angus Barn calls its own atmosphere "fine dining with a rustic elegance" — and that balance is deliberate. The dress code is business casual at minimum; cowboy hats are welcome, ball caps are not in the dining rooms.

The Barn's green credentials are equally considered. Since 1989, it has composted all biodegradable waste, converted fryer oil to biodiesel, reduced water consumption by 6,000 gallons a day, and built its Pavilion event venue from reclaimed materials dating to the 1600s. Meat scraps go to a carnivore rescue center in Goldsboro. These are operational commitments, not gestures.

For a wedding proposal, a business dinner, or a family night out, the Angus Barn remains one of the few restaurants in the American South that can credibly claim to be all of those things at once.
