The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Family Story on Federal Hill

Pane e Vino Ristorante and Enoteca sits on Atwells Avenue in the heart of Providence's Historic Federal Hill, and its roots run deeper than the address. Owner Joseph Dequattro is a second-generation Italian American born in Providence, whose grandparents emigrated from the regions of southern Lazio and northern Campania — once known as Terra di Lavoro, the Land of Work. That heritage of fertile farmland, honest ingredients, and closely held recipes shapes everything on the plate.

When Dequattro introduced Pane e Vino in 2002, the founding philosophy was clear: hospitality, comfort food, and the flavors he grew up with. More than two decades on, that philosophy hasn't shifted. "Fresh, simple & honest" remains the guiding principle, and the kitchen continues to source the freshest local ingredients while drawing on the passion and values passed down from his mother and grandmother.

The Kitchen and the Cellar

The menu is an expression of Southern Italian cooking brought into the present — seasonal flavors, fresh local produce, imported Italian specialties, and a wine list drawn exclusively from Italian producers. Signature dishes include Linguine alla Puttanesca, Frutti di Mare, and La Caprese con Mozzarella di Bufala, each a straightforward study in quality ingredients handled with care.

The prix-fixe offerings give a clear picture of the kitchen's range: starters like Rollatini di Melanzane — baked eggplant rolled with fresh ricotta and San Marzano tomato sauce — or La Provola con Funghi, baked Caciocavallo cheese with seasonal mushrooms. Pasta courses lean into tradition: Rigatoni Napolitani al Ragù with Graziano sausage and house-made meatballs, Burrata Cheese Ravioli with Collina tomatoes and roasted garlic, or Mezza Rigatoni alla Bolognese with a veal, pork, and beef ragù. Gluten-free diners are well looked after with a dedicated menu that doesn't ask them to compromise.

That commitment to authentic Italian cooking earned Pane e Vino recognition from Gambero Rosso — Italy's most authoritative food and wine guide — a distinction that places it among a select group of Italian restaurants in the United States meeting that standard.

The Experience

The atmosphere is intimate: a wine bar and dining room where guests are made to feel like family, complemented by outdoor seating and complimentary valet parking. Monday evenings bring half-price wine by the glass or bottle — a fitting gesture from a restaurant that takes its all-Italian cellar seriously. Private dining and catering round out what is, at its core, a neighborhood restaurant with genuine depth.
