The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

An Intimate Kitchen with a Clear Point of View

When Executive Chef and co-owner Scott Anderson opened elements on Witherspoon Street in 2008 alongside business partner Stephen Distler, he brought something Princeton hadn't quite seen before: a disciplined, ingredient-first approach to what he calls "Interpretive-American" cuisine. The premise is straightforward — seamlessly blend progressive modernist techniques with the freshest locally sourced ingredients, then let the flavors speak for themselves.

The room reinforces that philosophy. With just nine tables and 28 seats, all within sight of an open kitchen, the space is deliberately small. Anderson can personally attend to every plate that leaves the pass, and guests feel genuinely connected to the cooking rather than merely served by it.

The Team Behind the Plates

Anderson's culinary vision is carried out alongside Chef de Cuisine Mike Ryan, who grew up on a small farm in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, and brings a lifelong familiarity with the land to his work. Together, the team spends mornings picking herbs and foraging for ingredients that will appear on the evening's menu — farming, foraging, curing, and fermenting are daily practices, not marketing language.

That commitment to provenance earned elements a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, a recognition that reflects not only the depth of the wine list but the care with which pairings are constructed to complement the kitchen's seasonal output.

What's on the Menu

The farm-to-table fine dining experience at elements centers on an ever-changing tasting menu format. The Chef's Tasting Menu runs through a procession of courses — Jonah Crab with egg custard and trout roe, Mongo Ika Squid with black mint and lardo, Hokkaido Sea Scallops, Duck with fregola and truffle, and Ribeye with potato, mushroom, and greens — with optional wine pairing available for each format.

Elements also hosts special event dinners that push the menu further. A recent Truffle & Piedmont Wine Dinner paired white truffle tagliatelle and Wagyu beef with classic Langhe bottles including Barbaresco and Barolo. A collaboration with Sardinian chef Alessandro Taras brought dishes like Sardinian Culurgionis with ricotta and bottarga alongside Kona Kanpachi in a cassola sauce. These events reflect the kitchen's openness to international influences without ever losing sight of local roots.

The Experience

The dress code is upscale casual, and the atmosphere matches: refined but not stiff. Every occasion, as the team puts it, is treated like a special occasion — a standard that runs from a quiet Wednesday dinner to a full private event. For those seeking thoughtful farm-to-table fine dining outside New York City, elements offers something genuinely its own.
