The Puddle Dock Restaurant

Modern Colonial American fare, craft cocktails, and a Wine Spectator-awarded list in a historic Portsmouth, NH setting.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

Modern Colonial, Uncommon Hospitality

The Puddle Dock Restaurant sits at 66 Marcy Street in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, next to the historic Strawbery Banke district. The building itself carries a story — constructed in the 1960s originally for the New York World's Fair — and that layered character sets the tone for everything inside. Owner Ryan Lent, born and raised in Portsmouth, founded NNE Hospitality Group in 2020 and brought the restaurant to life with a clear conviction: that historic comfort and modern cooking belong together.

The concept is what the team calls "Modern Colonial" — a contemporary take on American and British culinary traditions, served in a space with genuine historic ambiance. It's a specific identity, and the kitchen commits to it fully.

Chef Derek Clough and the Kitchen

Executive Chef Derek Clough is the quiet force behind the food. He has worked alongside well-regarded chefs and traveled widely to develop his craft, yet he's notably uninterested in personal accolades — his focus stays on the plate and the team around him. As the media page puts it plainly: "Chef Derek Clough's food will comfort your palate, our hospitality will warm your soul." That's the operating philosophy. The menu spans dinner, wine, and dessert, with the American and British culinary influences woven through the fare in ways that feel grounded rather than gimmicky.

The Bar and the Wine List

The bar is described as the centerpiece of the restaurant — bartenders turning out craft cocktails alongside old favorites, drawing in locals and visitors for conversation as much as for drinks. The curated wine list earned The Puddle Dock a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for 2025, recognition that reflects genuine care in selection. It's the kind of list that rewards attention without demanding expertise.

Recognition and the Room

New Hampshire Magazine named Puddle Dock a "Great Food Destination" on the Seacoast, and OpenTable diners have ranked it among New Hampshire's top ten for ambiance, service, and food simultaneously — a combination that's harder to achieve than any single category. The restaurant also offers outdoor seating, private party space, and takeaway, making it as practical as it is atmospheric.

What comes through consistently is a sense of place: a Portsmouth restaurant built by Portsmouth people, cooking food that takes its regional and historical roots seriously without being precious about them.
