The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Story That Started With a Hamburger

Morton's The Steakhouse traces its origins to an unlikely moment: co-founders Arnie Morton and Klaus Fritsch, both working at the Playboy Club in Montreal, bonded over what Arnie declared the best hamburger he had ever tasted — the so-called "Million-Dollar Hamburger." That spark of shared standards launched a first location on State Street in Chicago in 1978, and the same founding philosophy — quality, consistency, genuine hospitality — still drives every Morton's today, including the Pittsburgh outpost at 625 Liberty Avenue.

USDA Prime, From the Same Suppliers Since Day One

The steakhouse's reputation rests on a straightforward commitment: Morton's has used the same suppliers for its aged prime beef since the beginning. Those suppliers select the best of their inventory specifically for Morton's, and anything that falls short of the restaurant's standards never reaches the cutting board. The result is USDA prime-aged beef representing the top two percent of beef available in the United States.

The menu extends well beyond steak. Chilean sea bass, oysters on the half shell, colossal shrimp, and red king crab legs round out a surf-and-turf experience that Morton's describes simply as "the finest from land and sea." Seasonal additions — currently including a Prime Bavette Steak Frites, Wagyu Beef Stroganoff, and Oysters Rockefeller — keep the menu moving without abandoning the classic steakhouse framework.

The Bar and the Wine Program

Bar 12-21 anchors the more casual side of the experience, with hand-crafted cocktails, imported and local craft brews, and chef-selected bar bites. The Pittsburgh location holds the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, part of a chain-wide recognition that reflects a list of more than 300 wines per location. Private wine lockers are available on-site, and the sommelier team — including on-staff General Managers and Sommeliers — is on hand to guide pairings. Morton's has also introduced a private label, "State & Rush," honoring its Chicago roots with a Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir sourced from Oak Ridge Winery in Lodi, California.

Private Dining and Events

The Pittsburgh location accommodates private parties, corporate events, and catered functions through dedicated private dining rooms. Morton's Prime Events program partners with athletes and charitable foundations for celebrity server evenings, seasonal wine dinners, and exclusive one-of-a-kind menus — all within the intimate setting of those same private rooms. For guests who simply want a quiet dinner, the elegant dining rooms offer the same attentive service whether the occasion is business or pleasure.
