The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Concept Built on Fresh Flavors and Genuine Hospitality

Juniper Grill was developed in 2010 by Pat McDonnell and Nick Koustis with a clear intention: create an affordable, quality dining experience that pairs American cuisine with a fresh California sensibility. What started in Peters Township has grown to six locations across Pittsburgh and the Charlotte area, with the Ballantyne location — serving Pineville — opening in 2024. The wine program earned a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, a recognition that reflects the care put into a list spanning 50+ curated bottles and more than 30 wines by the glass.

The Food: Scratch-Made, Ingredient-Driven

Every dish comes out of the kitchen made from scratch, using what the team describes as the best and freshest ingredients available. The menu moves comfortably between light and hearty, casual and elevated. Starters like the Ahi Tuna Wonton — rare-seared tuna on a crispy wonton with mango purée, avocado, and a chipotle drizzle — set a tone that is bright and precise without being fussy. The Crab Tostada, built on baked white corn tortilla with lump crab, jalapeño cream cheese, and chipotle crema, is another standout that captures the Californian spirit of the kitchen.

For mains, the Wood Grilled Salmon arrives with grilled asparagus and an optional jalapeño honey mustard or honey chipotle glaze. The Slow Roasted Short Rib and wood-grilled steaks anchor the heartier end of the menu. Salads — including the Rotisserie Chicken & Avocado with organic greens, roasted corn, goat cheese, dates, and cornbread croutons — hold their own as full meals. The Signature Cast Iron Skillet Cornbread, served warm with a golden crust, has become something of a house icon.

Desserts are taken seriously: Key Lime Pie, Vanilla Crème Brûlée, a Black Forest Chocolate Torte layered with Luxardo cherry, and a Signature Cornbread Dessert topped with strawberry sauce and Sarris French vanilla ice cream round out the menu with polish.

Drinks That Match the Food

The bar program leans into fresh-squeezed juice margaritas, sipping tequilas, and craft beers alongside the award-recognized wine list. Cocktails are crafted with the same attention as the kitchen's output: an Old Fashioned arrives under a smoke-filled glass cloche with Basil Hayden Bourbon; an Espresso Martini blends vanilla vodka, Kapali liqueur, and house cold brew; a Raspberry Bellini brings fresh purée and sparkling wine for something lighter. After dinner, the menu extends to tawny port, Bailey's, Limoncello, and Sambuca.

The Atmosphere

The space strikes a balance that is intimate without being stiff — ambient lighting, comfortable booths, and a pace that encourages lingering. The founding philosophy, rooted in what the team calls "Value of the Person," shapes how guests and staff alike are treated: with love, dignity, and respect. It is the kind of room where the conversation matters as much as what is on the plate.
