Vetri Cucina

Since 1998, Chef Marc Vetri's intimate 32-seat Italian restaurant on Spruce Street has set the standard for fine dining in Philadelphia.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Philadelphia Institution, More Than Two Decades in the Making

Vetri Cucina carries the longstanding reputation as one of the most respected and influential Italian restaurants in the country — and it earned that standing the hard way. In September 1998, Chef Marc Vetri, a Philadelphia native who had spent years working in the finest kitchens in Italy and the United States, returned home and took up residence in a historic townhouse on Spruce Street that had once been home to the legendary Le Bec-Fin. He brought with him his business partner Jeff Benjamin, and together they opened a restaurant that would quietly reshape the city's dining landscape.

The Space

Seating just 32 guests, the dining room is intimate by design. Hand-blown Murano glass chandeliers, Richard Ginori porcelain, and Venetian glassware give the room a warmth that evokes Italy without resorting to cliché. Guests don't feel like they're in a restaurant so much as welcomed into someone's home — which is precisely the point.

The Menu

Vetri Cucina serves exclusively tasting menus, and the format reflects the kitchen's ambitions. The Quattro Piatti menu ($165 per person) is a four-course experience — antipasti, pasta, secondi, dessert — with selections within each course, built around the highest quality local and seasonal ingredients. An optional wine pairing at $115 per person has been meticulously assembled by the wine director, a program that earned the restaurant Wine Spectator's Best of Award of Excellence. For those wanting a deeper dive, the seasonal Forchetta menu ($215 per person) is a chef-selected multi-course progression with an optional premium wine pairing at $150 per person.

Each evening begins with an amuse-bouche and a welcome cocktail — a seasonal spritz or a glass of prosecco — while the server presents the menu and takes note of any dietary needs. À la carte is not available; the two tasting formats are the restaurant's sole offerings, a deliberate choice that keeps the kitchen focused and every table experience consistent.

The menus are anything but static. Marc Vetri and his team travel continuously, researching ingredients, preparations, and flavors from across the globe, then translating those discoveries into the Italian framework that defines the restaurant's identity.

The People

Marc Vetri's credentials are substantial. Within two years of opening, he was named one of Food & Wine's Best New Chefs. In 2005, he received the James Beard Award for Best Chef Mid-Atlantic — the first of many nominations from the Foundation that have continued into the 2020s. The Philadelphia Inquirer has awarded the restaurant its highest "Four Bell" rating, and AAA has placed it on its exclusive Five Diamond list.

Holding down the kitchen day to day is Chef de Cuisine Jacob Rozenberg, who has been part of the Vetri family since 2012 and has led the kitchen since 2020. Jeff Benjamin, co-founder and general manager, brings the same long-term commitment to the front of house that Vetri brings to the food.

Beyond the Restaurant

Marc and Jeff founded the Vetri Community Partnership in 2008, a non-profit that empowers children and families to lead healthier lives through fresh food, hands-on experiences, and nutrition education. It's a meaningful extension of the same values that animate the restaurant itself — the belief that food, done well and shared generously, matters.
