The story
At 1 North 19th Street, on the 59th floor of the Comcast Technology Center, Jean-Georges Philadelphia occupies one of the most dramatic dining rooms in the country. Forty-foot floor-to-ceiling windows frame an uninterrupted panorama of the city, and the space itself was conceived by architect Norman Foster with artistic director Jeff Leatham around a single idea: bringing the outside in. Mirrors set into the ceiling catch the setting sun, reflect the sparkling night sky, and return the twinkling lights of the city back into the room — making the architecture as much a part of the experience as anything on the plate.
Arrival sets the tone immediately. Guests descend a waterfall-encased staircase into the dining room, a gesture that signals the separation from the street below and the beginning of something more considered.
Jean-Georges Vongerichten is, by any measure, one of the world's most celebrated chefs — a restaurateur responsible for a constellation of three- and four-star restaurants across the globe. Born on the outskirts of Strasbourg, France, he trained in both France and Asia, where he developed an enduring affinity for the aromatic and exotic flavours of the East. That sensibility travels with him to every table he sets.
Philadelphia, however, gets something particular. The menu pairs signature Jean-Georges classics — including his iconic Egg Toast and Caviar with Herbs — with inventive new dishes created exclusively for this location. "Philadelphia has become a major food destination with so many award-winning offerings," Vongerichten has said. "I am honoured to be part of this culinary community."
Pastry chef Danielle Seipp adds another dimension to the meal. Her desserts — among them a chocolate passionfruit mousse and a coconut semifreddo — are worth as much attention as the savoury courses. Guests who forgo dessert are likely to leave with a complimentary multi-tiered platter of petit fours regardless.
An expansive wine list, curated with sommelier recommendations, rounds out the table.
Forbes Travel Guide has awarded Jean-Georges Philadelphia its Five-Star distinction, placing it among the most rigorously vetted dining experiences in the world. That recognition reflects not only the quality of the food but the totality of the experience — the considered service, the extraordinary room, and the sense that every detail has been attended to.
For those who want to extend the evening, SkyHigh, the 60th-floor lounge directly above, offers cocktails and Jean-Georges small plates with views that look out across the full sweep of the city. Arriving early for dinner or lingering afterward both come recommended.
