The story
Barclay Prime sits on South 18th Street in the heart of Philadelphia's Rittenhouse Square neighborhood, occupying a space designed to evoke the warmth of a European library — polished and luxurious, yet animated by an energetic dining room. The result is an atmosphere that feels equally suited to a celebratory dinner and a quietly impressive weeknight out.
Part of the Starr Restaurants group, Barclay Prime has earned recognition from Wine Spectator with its Best of Award of Excellence — a distinction that reflects the depth and curation of a wine program built to complement serious beef and pristine seafood.
The steakhouse identity here is unapologetically ambitious. Prime cuts arrive 35 to 40 days dry-aged, and the beef program spans American Wagyu from Snake River Farms in Idaho and Creekstone Farms in Nebraska, up through A5 Japanese Wagyu sourced from Kagawa, Hyogo, and Shiga prefectures — including authentic Kobe striploin. Accompaniments like shaved truffle, foie gras, and smoked bone marrow allow diners to build each plate to their own standard of indulgence.
The raw bar anchors the seafood side, with oysters, king crab, hamachi crudo, and a Grand Plateau featuring the chef's selection of the day. Caviar service — Royal Baeri, Royal Ossetra, and Royal Kaluga — arrives with blini, crème fraîche, and the full traditional accompaniments.
No visit to Barclay Prime is complete without at least knowing about the Barclay Prime Cheesesteak. At $140, it is the steakhouse's most talked-about dish: hand-cut Wagyu, black truffle, foie gras, fried onions, and Cooper Sharp on a freshly baked sesame roll, served with a half-bottle of Champagne. It is an unapologetically extravagant riff on Philadelphia's most iconic sandwich — and it has become a landmark in its own right.
For private events, Barclay Prime offers a dedicated dining room accommodating up to 40 guests for seated dinners or 65 for cocktail receptions, with full audio-visual capabilities. Exclusive buyouts for up to 110 guests are available, making it one of the more versatile upscale venues in the city for corporate dinners and private celebrations.
