The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

Refined Southern Cooking on Palafox Street

Restaurant Iron describes itself plainly and accurately: a refined Southern kitchen. Since opening in the summer of 2012 — first at Marcus Pointe Golf Club, where a loyal lunch crowd quickly pushed the team into dinner service — the restaurant has grown into one of Pensacola's most recognized dining destinations. When a management change prompted a move in late 2014, the team chose 22 N. Palafox Street in the heart of downtown, and that address has defined the restaurant ever since.

The Kitchen and the People Behind It

Executive Chef and Owner Alex McPhail leads the kitchen, with General Manager Nathan Delaware overseeing the front of house. The two-person leadership reflects a tight, intentional operation — one where the open kitchen is as much a part of the dining room atmosphere as the tables themselves. Guests who arrive early, as one reviewer noted, sometimes get the chance to chat with the chefs directly, a detail that says something about how the place is run.

The sourcing is deliberate and regional. Restaurant Iron partners with a network of local purveyors — from East Hill Honey to Evans Meats to Craft Gourmet Bakery — because, as the restaurant puts it, "exceptional food starts with exceptional sourcing." These relationships shape a menu that shifts with the seasons rather than staying fixed year-round.

What's on the Menu

The lunch menu leans into Southern American flavors with real craft: a Cajun Reuben built on crab-boiled corned beef with Swiss and Choucroute, a Gulf Shrimp Salad Sandwich on a Kaiser roll with fresh herbs and cajun-boiled shrimp, and a Curried Chicken Salad Wrap with golden raisins and roasted peppers. All sandwiches come with a choice of tallow chips or orzo pasta salad. Dinner and seasonal tasting menus round out the experience, though those change with the kitchen's rhythm and what the region's producers are offering.

Recognition That Reflects the Work

The accolades have accumulated steadily. Florida Trend Magazine has awarded Restaurant Iron its Golden Spoon for seven consecutive years. Garden & Gun named it among the 50 Best Southern Restaurants in America. Forbes included it on its list of the 100 Most Romantic Restaurants in America. And Wine Spectator has recognized the restaurant with its Award of Excellence — a distinction that reflects the care given to the wine program alongside the food.

For a special occasion, a business lunch, or simply a well-made meal in downtown Pensacola, Restaurant Iron delivers consistent, grounded American cooking without pretense.
