The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Family Story That Starts Before Dawn

The day at Oceanos Oyster Bar & Sea Grill begins at 1:00 a.m. That's when Peter and Nikos Panteleakis pull on their coats, grab a coffee, and drive to the Fulton Fish Market—a ritual Peter has kept for over 40 years, and one Nikos joined at age 12. Vendors there know them as "Mr. Whale" and "Little Whale," a nod to The Whale, the family's first restaurant opened in 1969. That original address became the foundation for what Oceanos is today: a Greek seafood institution in Fair Lawn, New Jersey, with more than five decades of hospitality woven into its walls.

At the market, Peter moves with precision, hand-selecting only the freshest catch. Price is never the question—quality is the only criterion. By 2:30 a.m., the duo has moved on to MBH, where they source USDA Prime beef from a dry-aging facility, examining marbling cut by cut. Back in the kitchen by 3:30 a.m., Peter trades his jacket for an apron and begins baking the day's 80 loaves of signature homemade bread, along with delicate phyllo dough nests for dessert. By the time the first guests arrive, the kitchen has already been running for hours.

What's on the Plate

The menu reflects the same Greek seafood sensibility that has defined the Panteleakis family across generations. The raw bar anchors the experience, with an exclusive hand-picked oyster selection sourced from pristine waters—Spinny Creek from Maine, Kumamoto from Oregon, Blue Point and Fishers Island from New York—served with a signature mignonette. The Oceanos Seafood Tower brings together oysters, colossal shrimp, littleneck clams, and half a lobster in one showpiece presentation.

Appetizers lean into Mediterranean character: wood-grilled octopus finished with red wine vinegar and extra virgin olive oil, Shrimp Saganaki pan-seared with tomato, bell pepper, and crumbled feta, and a spread plate of taramosalata, hummus, and roasted eggplant with warm pita. For mains, the bronzino (Lavraki) arrives with lemon roasted potatoes and can be deboned tableside, while the 22-oz dry-aged Prime Cowboy Rib Eye demonstrates that the kitchen's ambitions extend well beyond the sea.

Wine as a Second Vocation

Wine at Oceanos is treated with the same seriousness as the food. The cellar holds over 10,000 carefully curated bottles—more than 120 Champagne and sparkling selections alone, alongside bold California reds, French and Italian bottles, and rare finds sourced from vineyards worldwide. Weekly tastings keep the list in constant motion. That commitment earned Oceanos the Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence, a recognition the restaurant describes as making it the only seafood restaurant in New Jersey to receive the distinction. A sommelier is available by email for pairing guidance before a reservation.

The Atmosphere

Nikos, who grew up in the restaurant and now runs the floor alongside his father, describes the ethos simply: "Welcome home." Peter still steps out of the kitchen mid-service to connect with guests. That combination—serious technique, family warmth, and a wine program of genuine depth—is what keeps Oceanos in a category of its own among New Jersey's Greek seafood restaurants.
