The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Name Reclaimed with Pride

Terrone — shortened to Terún in dialect — was once a dismissive label used in Northern Italy for people from the south. Franco and Maico Campilongo, both from Calabria, and their close friend and chef Kristjan D'Angelo, born in Puglia, chose to wear it as a badge of honor. When they opened on California Avenue on February 8th, 2013, the name announced exactly what they stood for: roots, family, hard work, and the cooking traditions of Southern Italy. Recognized by Gambero Rosso in 2025, Terùn has earned its place among the Bay Area's most respected Italian tables.

The Pizza, the People, the Craft

Terùn holds certification from the Verace Pizza Napoletana association, the international body that safeguards traditional Neapolitan pizza standards. Every pie is made with naturally leavened dough, Italian San Marzano tomatoes, fior di latte mozzarella, and baked in a wood-fired oven — the same shovel Kristjan carried with him from Italy still works the oven today. The Food Network ranked Terùn among the top seven most authentic Neapolitan-style pizzerias in America, and coverage has followed from the New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, and Eater SF.

The pizza menu runs from the spare, classic Marinara (San Marzano, garlic, oregano, olive oil) to the indulgent San Daniele — 24-month prosciutto crudo, cremini mushrooms, arugula, shaved Grana Padano, and truffle oil. The signature Terún pizza tops its tomato base with cured spicy sausage; the Nduja brings spreadable Calabrese salami and zucchini. Flours come from Petra Molino Quaglia, a deliberate choice that speaks to the founders' insistence on sourcing.

Beyond the Oven

The kitchen extends well past pizza. Handmade pastas include red beet gnocchi with taleggio and gorgonzola, scialatielli with porcini and rosemary, and short rib ravioli with a red wine reduction. Entrées reach to a Certified Angus Beef tagliata and Mediterranean branzino over fregola sarda. The wine list leans Italian — Barolo, Brunello, Franciacorta — with thoughtful California representation alongside.

The space offers indoor dining, a patio, and a covered terrace suited to private dinners and corporate gatherings. Monday evenings bring live music, a tradition that has made Terùn a genuine neighborhood anchor rather than just a destination restaurant. The Bici-Amici cycling project — early-morning rides departing from the pizzeria — reflects the same community spirit the founders brought from Southern Italy and have quietly built into Silicon Valley life.
