The story
Set inside the historic Oshkosh Country Club near Lake Winnebago, TJ's Highland Steakhouse brings a level of American fine dining that competes well beyond its geography. The 6,500-square-foot space draws on the aesthetic of a traditional Scottish lodge — tartan cloths imported from Scotland, hickory wainscoting, luxurious seating, and dynamic lighting that shifts the room from relaxed lunch to polished evening service. Business casual attire is the standard, and the atmosphere earns it.
Executive Chef Michael England is not a local hire filling a local role. He spent eight years as Executive Chef at The Palm Restaurant in New York City, followed by five years at The Palm in Atlantic City — two of the most demanding steakhouse kitchens in the country. He is also a recipient of the President's Award from the American Culinary Federation. His stated goal for TJ's is direct: "to be one of the best steakhouses in America." The kitchen he built here was designed from the ground up to support that.
The centerpiece of the menu is dry-aged beef — specifically the Ribeye and New York cuts, which are aged in a controlled environment to break down fat and muscle fibers, concentrate flavor, and achieve what the restaurant describes as "intensely flavorful and sublimely tender" results. The beef is broiled at 1500°F. Fresh seafood and specialty dishes round out the American menu, giving the kitchen range beyond the steakhouse core.
TJ's Highland Steakhouse holds Wine Spectator's Best of Award of Excellence — a distinction that reflects not just selection but depth and thoughtfulness. The cellar draws from producers across California, Bordeaux, Burgundy, Washington, Oregon, New Zealand, Germany, Alsace, and Italy, with over 100 selections served in Riedel Performance and Rona by Bormioli Rocco stemware. The spirits list takes the same approach, assembling fine and rare whiskeys from Scotland, Kentucky, Japan, India, and Ireland.
Despite its country club address, TJ's Highland Steakhouse is open to the public seven days a week, with brunch, lunch, and dinner service across the week. Private events, outdoor seating, and a dedicated bar and patio menu extend the experience beyond the main dining room.
